St. C. advances to states

ZANESVILLE — St. Clairsville advanced to its first Ohio state team golf tournament since 2011 Monday with a narrow one-shot victory over John Glenn during Division II District Tournament action at a rainy and soggy Eaglesticks Golf Course.

The Red Devils fired a four-man total of 309 to John Glenn’s 310. Indian Valley was third at 314. The top two teams advance to the state tournament on Oct. 11-14 at Akron Firestone Country Club.

“What a great day to be a Red Devil. We have been banging our head against this door for a few years now, and to have finally kicked it in this year is really gratifying,” St. Clairsville coach Ryan Clifford said. “A ton of people contribute to wins like this. From the parents, who have taken these kids all over the country to get better, to the school administration that allowed us to travel and play a schedule that prepared us for days like today.

“Our guys have thought of nothing else since we left here a year ago. What a total team effort,” Clifford added.

Gavin Cress River View 68 earned medalist honors with a 68.

St. Clairsville senior Brodi Foster tied with Meadowbrook’s Ben Coss; John Glenn’s CJ Dolan and Indian Valley’s Deagan Beaber. They all shot 74, but Beaber advanced to state competition in a playoff.

Other Red Devils scoring were Andrew Abel and Ethan Turner each with 78, while Mavrik Malin carded a 79.

“How about Ethan Turner? He sometimes gets overlooked and we said all year that there would be a day when he would carry us,” Clifford continued. “Thankfully, today was the day. We can’t wait to get to Firestone.”

Just missing a state berth were Barnesville’s Hayden Treadway with a 75, which was one shot better than teammate Brady Gallagher. Harrison Central’s Nash Roberts had a 76 and Buckeye Local’s Kamden Kinyo 79.

Martins Ferry placed eighth at 375. Nolan Zambori having an 80.
