Barnesville’s King places fifth in Ironman Invitational
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio — Barnesville has had a lot of outstanding wrestlers, some of whom have gone on to win Ohio state titles. However, none of them have been able to earn a spot on the awards podium at the prestigious Ironman Invitational.
That all changed Saturday when Shamrock senior Ayden King placed fifth at 165 pounds. The two-time all-Ohioan went 6-2. Among his six victories were two pins — both under 40 seconds — two decisions and a medical forfeit and an injury default.
“He wrestled some good matches,” Barnesville head coach Jayson Stephen said. “That’s good for him.”
Seeded No. 13, King received a bye to start the tournament and then pinned Rhys Novosad of Bixby, Ok., in 27 ticks. He dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 4 Liam Carlin of Green Farms Academy, Ct.; before winning 5-1 over Barry Norman of Blair Academy, Pa., and 4-2 over No. 12 Anthony Gutierrez of St. Charles East, Ill., in the consolation round. King then received a medical forfeit from No. 6 Brody Sendele from Hononegah High School, Ill., and an injury default win over No. 7 Bradlee Farrer of Pleasant Grove, Utah. A 12-3 loss to No. 5 CJ Torres of Lake Highland Prep in Orlando sent him to the fifth-sixth place match where he pinned No. 11 Shane McFillin of Bethlehem Catholic, Pa., in a mere 39 seconds.
“I’m happy for Ayden. He works hard and there’s no way he shouldn’t earn a spot on the top of the podium at the end of the season,” Stephen said.
Linsly freshman Brock Humphrey, seeded No. 8 at 106 won his first two matches after receiving a bye. He fell in the semifinals, 3-0, to No. 1 and eventual champion Caleb Noble of Warren Township, Ill. He then fell 5-2 to Cruzer Dominguez of Creighton Prep in Omaha, Neb., in the blood round.
