Bridgeport tops Malvern in sectional tournament

BRIDGEPORT — Vanessa Mullen struck out six, walked none and scattered four hits as Bridgeport opened the Ohio Division VII Sectional Tournament with a 13-3 victory in six innings over visiting Malvern on the Irene Ehni Memorial Field. She also singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

McKayla Plants singled thrice to knock in four runs for the Bulldogs who scored at least one run in all six frames. Addie Snodgrass had two RBI. Rowan Herman singled twice, doubled and plated a run.

No. 5 seeded Bridgeport now plays top-seeded Conotton Valley on Monday in Bowerston.

New Philadelphia 9,

Steubenville 1

STEUBENVILLE — Sparked by a five-run third inning, New Philadelphia pulled away from Big Red en route to a 9-1 victory in an Ohio Division III Eastern District Sectional Co-Final Wednesday evening at the Crimson Complex.

With the win, New Philadelphia (19-7) will take on rival and No. 1 seed Dover in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. Monday on the road.

Big Red’s lone run came in the bottom of the first.

The Quakers recorded a run in the first, five in the third and one in the fifth to build a 7-1 advantage before tacking on two more runs in the sixth.

Big Red had bases loaded in the first, but the hosts were only able to push across one run. The Red and Black had three runners reach in the third and two in the sixth, but they were unable to come up with a timely hit to produce runs.

Jillian Howard picked up the win for the Quakers. She struck out four without walking a batter.

Isabella Cadille took the loss for Big Red. She struck out three and walked four.

For Big Red, Sena Smith singled twice, and Sadie Edwards and Riley Zorne each singled once.

The game was the final one for Big Red’s three seniors – Gordana Vein, Smith and Paige Matteson.

BASEBALL

Madonna 23, Paden City 0

WEIRTON — Madonna got off to a fast start, and an 18-run third inning broke the game wide open as the Blue Dons shut out the eighth-seeded Wildcats, 23-0, in five innings via mercy rule in a West Virginia Class A Region 1 Tournament Game Wednesday evening at Bowman Field.

Following the win, the Blue Dons are scheduled to get right back at it today as Madonna is slated to play No. 4 Clay-Battelle at 5 p.m. at home. Clay-Battelle defeated No. 5 seed Trinity Christian in extra innings Wednesday.

Matthew Geer recorded the win for Madonna. Geer went the distance only allowing one hit by the Wildcats.

Braxton Yoho went the distance and took the loss for Paden City (2-18).

Jack Nelson singled for the lone hit for the Wildcats.

Madonna delivered 18 hits in the win– six of which went for extra bases. The Blue Dons belted five doubles and one triple en route to the win.

Individually, lead-off man Jacob Lazear recorded a single, a double and a triple, Geer contributed two doubles and four RBI and Reed Wilharm recorded two singles and four RBI. Also, Sam Brooks produced three singles, a double and two RBI, Reno Fuscardo finished with two singles and three RBI and David Connors delivered a double and two RBI. Finally, Kaiden Wells tallied two singles and an RBI, and Koleton Grishkevich and Maddox Bowen each chipped in with a single and three RBI.

Paden City advanced to take on Madonna after No. 9 seed Hundred dropped out of the tournament. The Wildcats were credited with a 1-0 win against the Hornets Monday.

Barnesville 10, Shadyside 4

BARNESVILLE — Dylan Blon went the distance on the mound and Casey Carpenter was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in two runs as the Shamrocks defeated visiting Tigers on the Memorial Park diamond.

The southpaw fanned four, walked a pair and scattered 11 singles.

Caden Powell and Jack Anderson each singled twice and produced three runs to pace the Shamrocks’ 13-hit attack. Blake Burkhart added a single, double and RBI.

Ryan Collins singled thrice for the Tigers. Cole Micker and Damien Russell each singled two times, with Micker knocking in a pair of runs and Russell one.

River 26, Beallsville 1

BEALLSVILLE — The Pilots piled on the runs on Wednesday against the Blue Devils.

Peyton Blue pitched the first three innings of the game, striking out five and surrendering no earned runs– though Beallsville did score one unearned in the bottom of the first.

Blue also hammered away at the plate, collecting four of River’s 21 hits, including a double and two homers. Blue finished with eight RBI and scored five runs

Carrollton 3, Indian Creek 1

CARROLLTON — Indian Creek (18-4) dropped their fourth game of the season to the host Warriors (17-4).

Sal Barcalow singled twice and drove in the lone run for Creek.
