Colvin claims victory in Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic women’s walk
WHEELING — Brenda Colvin of Wheeling stayed toward the front of the pack with a group of friends before pulling ahead in the 47th annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Walk to earn first place among the women walkers.
No stranger to the annual event, Colvin claimed her first victory Saturday morning in the annual Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Walk with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 31 seconds.
“I’ve done it many times — I always walk. I’ve come in second and third, but I’ve never won before,” she said.
Colvin, 66, said her group of fellow walkers helped her keep a steady pace before she pulled away when they got closer to the finish line.
“We all started here together — my friends, Heidi and Sarah,” she said. “They pushed me. We pushed each other, and I just kind of came out ahead. They’re my inspiration. They came in second and third.”
The group led the women in the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic Walk, with Sarah Donley finishing second with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 15 seconds, and Heidi Ferns taking third place with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes, 40 seconds.
Colvin said she keeps a regular training routine to stay in shape for events like this.
“Usually every Saturday, I do a 5K or 10K,” she said.
While the cool weather Saturday was welcomed by many runners and walkers, Colvin said she is usually prepared for anything Mother Nature throws her way.
“I’m fine with any kind of weather — I’m good with heat, but this was nice,” she said.
