Inaugural Colton McKivitz Golf Classic set for Saturday
Event will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club to support UL football program
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Colton McKivitz was a three-sport standout — baseball, basketball and football — at Union Local High School, but one sport he didn’t play was golf. However, after the 2015 graduate and current starting right tackle for the San Francisco 49ers got into the NFL, he, like many other professional athletes, took up the sport.
Thus, the inaugural Colton McKivitz Golf Classic will be held Saturday at Belmont Hills Country Club. A 9 a.m. shotgun start kicks what organizers hope becomes an annual event.
“Colton was looking for a way to give back to those who helped him reach where he is. Members of the Union Local Touchdown Club, which I belong to, began talking with him and we discussed a couple of different options with him,” organizer Dave Phiilips said. “We settled on doing a golf scramble with the proceeds going to improvements at the Union Local weight room.”
Phillips said the Touchdown Club, which supports the football program, wanted to keep the event as small as possible but still have a big-time feel.
“We wanted to make sure we put on a quality tournament,” he stressed. “We wanted to limit the amount of teams we had so that everyone could through their rounds in a decent manner.”
He said the event is sold-out with 28 foursomes, but there is a waiting list if some players don’t show up.
Dinner will be served immediately following the conclusion of the tournament, as will an auction.
“At that point in time, Colton will address those in attendance and thank them for their support of the Union Local football program. Union Local head football coach Bernie Thompson will also speak about the upcoming season.”
Even though no 49ers will be appearing with McKivitz, he will have a former WVU teammate — Jacob Buccigrossi — with him, according to Phillips.
