OVAC releases All-Conference softball teams

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference released its all-conference teams on Wednesday, recognizing the best of the OVAC across each of its five classes.

Each class, 1A-5A, also had a Player of the Year named on Wednesday. In 1A, Conotton Valley’s Maddison Kelley was named Player of the Year. Kelley, committed to Valparaiso University, was joined on the OVAC 1A First Team by teammates Ava Williams and Delilah Williams. Frontier was the only other team to have three players on the first team- Kaycee Berentz, Alexis Livingston and Kenzie Livingston.

The 2A Player of the Year is Caldwell’s Makayla Mumaw. Mumaw led Caldwell to the 2A OVAC Championship as well as a sectional championship this season. The Rockets are 1A OVAC champs and are still alive in the Ohio playoff race. Mumaw’s teammates, Sophia Marshall and Hanna Reiter, are also on the OVAC 2A First Team. The Bridgeport Bulldogs matched Caldwell’s number of first-teamers, with Hanna Brewer, Jayde Carman and Vanessa Mullen all making the cut.

Martins Ferry’s Giana Chirpas was named the OVAC 3A Player of the Year. Chirpas, Maddie Lucas and Abbey Snedeker made for three Purple Riders on the 3A OVAC First Team, following an OVAC 3A Championship and Eastern District Semifinals berth. Wheeling Central had a like number of players on the first team, with Josie Frizzell, Erin Maxwell and Maddie Miehle being elected.

In 4A, Harrison Central’s Kelsey Powers was named Player of the Year, helping her team to a OVAC 4A runner-up finish and still leading the Huskies through the Ohio playoff field. Fellow Huskies Mikayla Pelegreen and Olivia Tonkovich also made the OVAC 4A First Team. Oak Glen’s trio of Riley Bruce, Mattie Carney and Nevaeh Heath tied Harrison Central for most players on the first team.

Steubenville’s Sena Smith earned this season’s 5A Player of the Year award. Smith, an Ohio University commit, is Big Red’s all-time hit and home run leader. Teammate Paige Matteson joins Smith on the OVAC 5A First Team. Morgantown placed three on the first team, more than any other squad. Liz Alsop, Paige Rhodes and Madison Wisman all made the cut.
