Slew of local track stars qualify at district meet

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Newcomerstown High School was the site of this year’s Ohio Division III District Meet for local schools including Barnesville, River, Shadyside, Steubenville Catholic, Bellaire and Monroe Central. 22 different schools in all competed Thursday to qualify for regionals, with the top four finishes in each event moving on to the penultimate stop of the season.

Among the 22 teams present, Ridgewood was district champions on the women’s side with 68 points as a team, followed by second-place Malvern (58) and third-place Strasburg-Franklin (54.5). On the men’s side, Shenandoah took home the title with 90.5 points, followed by second-place Malvern (64) and third-place Ridgewood (62.5).

FIELD EVENTS

A whole host of local competitors are moving onwards and upwards for their performances in field events at the district meet.

Shadyside’s Gabby Kosky took first place in the women’s high jump with a personal-best leap of 4-11.

Steubenville Catholic Crusader James McInnis claimed first place in the men’s high jump with a personal-best 6-4.

The Shadyside Tigers’ Jaycob Trigg snagged second in the men’s pole vault, clearing 12-4 for a personal record. The Tigers’ Ean Weatherson came in fourth place in the men’s high jump with a 5-8.

Bellaire’s Alyson Vingia placed highly in the women’s shot put and discus, coming in third in the shot put with a 25-5.5 and second in the discus throw with a 127-10. Teammate Aubree Hines came in fourth in the women’s long jump, a 15-6.75 getting the job done.

River’s Ashley Miller placed second in the women’s high jump with a personal-best 4-11.

Steubenville Catholic’s Mary Rhode finished third in the women’s high jump with a 4-10.

Monroe Central’s Evan Knowlton finished second in the men’s long jump with a 21-0.5, a personal record.

RELAYS

Bellaire took home a first-place finish in the 4×400-meter men’s relay. Raekwon Pettigrew, Manuel Garcia, Landen Perdue and Kole Gonglik combined for the feat.

The same four Big Reds also came in second in the men’s 4×800-meter relay.

Belalire’s women also got in on the action. Kayla Edgar, Liz Mayer, Gigi Kendle and Grace LaRoche came in second in the 4×800-meter relay.

Shadyside’s women came right behind in third, with the quartet of Gabby Kosky, Bayden Parr, Laken Miller and Chloe Meholovitch.

Monroe Central’s mens team of Evan Knowlton, Tyler Whitacre, Corbin Farnsworth and Jacob Fogle came in second in the 4×100-meter relay.

Steubenville Catholic’s team of Elizabeth Schmiesing, Mara Delaney, Mary Rhode and Monica Bolster came in second place in the 4×400-meter women’s relay.

River finished third in the same event, their team composed of Ashley Miller, Brayleigh Trifonoff, Carlegh Trifonoff and Kara Miller.

The Pilots also got a third-place finish in the women’s 4×100-meter relay with the same team.

Barnesville finished fourth in the women’s 4×200-meter relay, the team of Alivia Smolira, Lexi Grear, Avery Bliss and Addyson Keiger getting the job done.

Shadyside’s four-pack of Ace Nelson, Ean Weatherson, Braden O’Grady and Caden Nippert finished fourth in the men’s 4×100-meter relay.

SPRINTS/DISTANCE

Steubenville Catholic’s Andrew Rhode took home two first place medals in distance events- the men’s 1600-meter, where Rhode clocked a 4:33.83, and the men’s 3200-meter, where he clocked a 9:32.50.

Bellaire’s Landen Perdue finished in third in the 1600-meter with a 4:46.31, and in fourth in the 3200-meter with a 10:10.34.

Two others were individual champions in races Thursday.

Bellaire’s Raekwon Pettigrew finished in first in the men’s 200-meter, clocking a 23.40.

River’s Brooke Huffman came in first in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.72.

Barnesville’s Avery Bliss came in third in the 100-meter hurdles at a 17.32.

Three locals finished highly in the women’s 300-meter hurdles. Barnesville’s Lydia Fuchs finished in second with a 50.41- a personal record. Shadyside’s Mariah Bracy finished in third place 2ith a personal-best time of 51.12. Fellow Tiger Mia Boatman-Salas finished in fourth with a 51.54.

Shadyside’s Kaiden Baker finished in third in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, finishing in a personal-record 16.50.

Monroe Central’s Evan Knowlton placed fourth in the men’s 100-meter at a 11.88.

Steubenville Catholic’s Mary Rhode placed third in the women’s 1600-meter with a 5:26.61.

The Crusaders’ Elizabeth Schmiesing finished in third in the women’s 400-meter with a 1:03.31.

River’s Ashley Miller finished in fourth in the women’s 200-meter, clocking a personal-best 27.51.
