Ferry’s Chirpas named first-team all-Ohio

COLUMBUS — Only one local player received first-team all-Ohio softball honors — that being Martins Ferry’s Giana Chirpas in Division V.

Only a sophomore, Chirpas was an integral part of the Purple Riders’ OVAC Class 3A championship when he slugged a solo home run for the gamer’s only run in a 1-0 victory against Wheeling Central.

For the season, Chirpas, who saw action behind the plate and at shortstop, batted a whopping .596 with 53 hits. She had 22 singles, 14 doubles, four triples and a single-season record 13 home runs. She also drove in 49 runs. Her OBP was .684. She slugged at a 1.281 percentage and recorded an OPS of .1.965.

Martins Ferry head coach Jerry Magistro shared the D-V Coach of the Year award with Claymont’s Alli Edwards.

Also earning first team was Conotton Valley’s Maddison Kelley who was also the Division VII Player of the Year. Rockets’ head coach Jeremy Bleininger was named the Coach of the Year.

Making second team in Division V was Union Local’s Laken Vinskovich.

Harrison Central’s Kelsey Powers was named to the second team in D-IV. Indian Creek’s McKenna Scott was honorable mention.

Barnesville’s Maddie Tyson earned honorable mention in D-V, while Conotton Valley’s Delilah Williams and Caldwell’s MaKayla Mumaw were both second team in D-VII

River’s Ava Wohnas and Frontier’s Kaysee Berentz were both honorable mention in D-VII.
