Jack Dorsey Tennis Tournament this week at Oglebay

Ohio Valley residents will have the opportunity to watch nationally ranked players as well as local standouts as they compete in the 2025 Jack Dorsey Memorial Senior Tennis Tournament.
The Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club will present this level 3 national event from June 18 to 22 at Oglebay’s Horne Family Racquet Center and Wheeling Park’s Hilltop Courts.
Divisions include ages 35 to 85 singles and doubles, with age groups in five-year increments.
Play will begin on Wednesday evening and will conclude with most finals being played on Sunday, June 22. The schedule of play and match results will be available at the USTA website (https://playtennis.usta.com/tournaments) using the keyword Dorsey.
Kelly Molyneaux Rose is returning as tournament director. Having served in this capacity since 2019, she has earned the respect of the gentlemen who travel here to compete for national ranking points.
This event is bringing over 120 players to the area from 22 states, the District of Columbia, and Ontario. The largest number of players are from Florida, but many come from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Virginia.
Rose shared, “I’ve seen these fellas at other tournaments around the country over the past year, most recently at the World Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. It’s a kind of brotherhood, and when paths cross there are smiles and high 5’s. Guys are often proud to show me that they are using their swag from a past Dorsey, most often a WOTC tournament shirt or personalized insulated cup. Just as our tournament is important to them in their hunt for ranking points, their presence here at Oglebay is important to us as they spread the word of this tournament and the beauty of the resort as they travel the circuit. Our tournament is known for the enchanting landscape and the friendliness of the volunteers.”
Divisions with the greatest number of entrants are the 65, 70, and 75 singles, with 21, 18, and 21 respectively.
Several participants are ranked in the top 5 nationally in their age groups: Calvin LaForrest is ranked 3, in 35s, 2 in 40s, and 1 in 45s; Michael Malcek is ranked 3 in the 45s; Michael Rose is ranked 4 in the 65s; and Donald Mathias is ranked 4 in the 85s.
Using recommendations from the USTA seeding committee, Rose has published the seeds in the singles divisions: men’s 35 singles #1 Stanislov Nevolovich (Innisfil, ON) and #2 Jeremy McClelland (Wheeling, WV); men’s 40 singles – round robin; men’s 45 singles #1 Michal Malcek (Fort Walton Beach, FL) and #2 James Montgomery (New Market, MD); men’s 50 singles #1 John Tashiro (South Burlington, VT) and #2 Mike Lee (Chardon, OH); men’s 55 singles #1 Alberico Menozzi (Raleigh, NC) and #2 John Tashiro ( South Burlington, VT); men’s 60 singles #1 Mark Florman (Cleveland, OH) and #2 Greg Merril (Bethesda, MD); men’s 65 singles #1 Michael Rose (Ecorse, MI) and #2 Bryan Sauer (Wilmington, DE); men’s 70 singles #1 Joaquim Rasgado (Mills River, NC) and #2 Robert Graham (Tampa, FL); men’s 75 singles #1 Charles Taylor (Lawrence, PA) and #2 Michael Beautyman (Lake Worth Beach, FL); men’s 80 singles #1 Joh Tibbite (Kitchener, ON) and #2 Murray MacNeil (Naples, FL); and lastly, men’s 85 singles #1 Donald Mathias (Winchester, VA) and #2 L. Members of the WOTC who are slated to compete include the following: Jeremy McClelland (35 singles and doubles), Tyler McCullough (35 singles and doubles), Tyler Szafran (35 singles), Alfred Valle (50 singles), Mark Panepinto (55 singles), and Harold Pickens/Bill Mercer (70 doubles).
McClelland will return to defend his title as 35 singles champion, and he will once again partner with McCullough as they compete to defend their 35 doubles title.
This tournament is named for John T. “Jack” Dorsey, Jr., who passed away in 2010. Dorsey had a great love for the sport of tennis. He enjoyed competing as well as serving as an ambassador for the sport. Dorsey brought this men’s national to Wheeling and served as its director for 15-plus years.
Debbie Pickens, WOTC president, commented, “This tournament is the culmination of a year of preparation. I want to thank all those who have assisted in any way to make this event possible: Oglebay staff, WOTC Board members, all volunteers, and the generous sponsors.”
Pickens added, “Admission to the Dorsey is free for all tennis enthusiasts, so we hope that Ohio Valley residents will come to support the local players as well as those who have travelled from afar.”
This event and the WVU Medicine West Virginia Open are the two primary fund raisers for the WOTC. The player fees cover the direct costs of the event. Any monies remaining are used to help the WOTC offer year-round tennis programming to youth and adults in the Ohio Valley.
