Ohio Valley Ironmen blank visiting Erie Express, 39-0

MOUNDSVILLE — Ohio Valley scored touchdowns in all three aspects of its game Saturday night in rolling to a 39-0 victory over the Erie Express on the artificial surface at Monarch Stadium.

The Ironmen (2-0) had four offensive touchdowns, returned an interception for six points and ran a punt back 72 for another TD. Meanwhile, the defense recorded its second consecutive shutout, limiting the Express to just 78 yards of total offense, with 72 of that coming through the air.

Ohio Valley scored on its first three offensive possessions in bolting to a 25-0 lead after one quarter. Quarterback Javonte Howard continued his superb play by finding Jeremiah Nelson on a 7-yard swing pass in the right flat to open the scoring. The University of Charleston product then teamed with Cashid Raymond from 37 yards out as Raymond made a diving snag in the middle of the end zone. D’Ago Hunter capped the early outburst with a 4-yard run around left end.

The PATs following all three touchdowns were no good.

“We’re throwing the ball well. In our style of offense, you want to be able to run well and throw well and I think we are doing that,” Ohio Valley head coach/general manager Manny Matsakis said.

The defense got involved in the scoring when Caleb Ham picked off a pass by Amon and returned it 27 yards to paydirt. Daniel Parisi’s placement made it 25-0.

Howard, who now has seven TD strikes in two games, found Joseph Boykin from 7 yards out before Isaiah Harris fielded a punt at his own 28. Weaving his way through traffic, he found the end zone to complete the 72-yard return. Parisi was true on both point-afters.

“I think our guys are believing in themselves. I also think we’ve built a good culture as a team so far and we have a chance to keep stacking up wins,” Matsakis added.

Howard finished 11-of-16 for 178 yards and three scores. Raymond caught two for 78, while seven other Ironmen receivers caught at least one pass.

Kessawn Abraham also had an interception for Ohio Valley.

The Ironmen welcome the Tennessee Hornets to the Ohio Valley next Saturday. According to Matsakis, the Hornets are an all-star team that travels around the United States.

Ohio Valley moved the sticks 15 times to a mere two for Erie.

“I expected our defense to play well coming into the season and it has lived up to the billing,” Matsakis offered. “Considering we brought two guys in late (this week), that’s pretty good. They both played well.”

Matsakis was referring to cornerback Kevon Burnett and linebacker Khyree Marshall. Burnett came over from the Cincinnati Dukes, while Marshall played collegiately at Bethany.

The second half was played in 7-minute quarters with a running clock.
