Three more selected for Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025
MARTINS FERRY — It’s time to unveil three more selections for the Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025.
Joining the Class of ’25 to be inducted on Friday, August 29 in conjunction with the Purple Riders’ home football game against Malvern are Frank Valentine (Class of 1994), Dan Jones (Class of 1998) and Craig Bruney (Class of 1999).
Previously announced selections included Ken Sokolowski (Class of 1983), Kevin Sokolowski (Class of 1983) and Nick Yourkovich (Class of 1998).
The final three members of this year’s Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame — presented by Unified Bank – will be announced next week followed by the choices for the “Wall of Honor” and the “Teams of Distinction.”
The Hall of Fame Class of 2025 and the “Wall of Honor” selections will be honored during an afternoon luncheon for families at the MFHS cafeteria and they will be introduced at halftime of the game.
Here’s a look at the three bios:
Frank Valentine
A four-year letterman in wrestling, he was a two-time All-Ohioan thanks to a sixth place finish at 140 pounds as a junior and a fifth place finish at 145 pounds as a senior at the OHSAA Division II State Tournament.
Valentine was a three-time place-winner in the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships, highlighted by winning the 145-pound weight class as a senior. He placed sixth at 130 pounds as a sophomore and fifth at 145 pounds as a junior. He was also an Ohio Division II Sectional and District champion.
As a senior, he served as a co-captain of the Riders’ mat squad that won the Division II Sectional championship, finished as runner-up at the D-II District, placed 13th at the OHSAA Division II State Tournament and won the OVAC Class 3A title. During his career, Ferry won three OVAC Class 3A crowns. three OHSAA Division II Sectional titles and several invitationals.
He was inducted into the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2011 In football, he was a multi- year letterman who played receiver and defensive back.
Dan Jones
A four-year letterman in wrestling (three at Martins Ferry), he finished his career with 114 victories highlighted by his runner-up finish at 135 pounds at the OHSAA Division III State Tournament (he dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to Jerry Stratos of Mogadore in the finals).
Jones was a three-time Division III Sectional and two-time Division III District champion. He was a four-time place-winner in the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships, finishing eighth at 119 pounds as a freshman (at Linsly), placing fourth at 119 pounds as a sophomore, second at 135 pounds as a junior and claiming the 135-pound title as a senior.
Jones served as co-captain as a senior as the Rider grapplers captured the overall team championship at the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament, won the OHSAA Division III Sectional title and finished as the runner-up in the Division III District, and finished fourth in the OHSAA Division III State Dual Tournament. MFHS also won the OVAC Class 3A crown during Jones’ junior season.
He was inducted into the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014.
In football, he was a multi-year letterwinner at outside linebacker and tailback who played on the 1997 team that posted an 8-2 record and finished No. 13 in the final AP Division IV state poll.
Craig Bruney
He was a force both on the wrestling mat and in the football trenches for the Purple Riders, earning four letters in the mat sport and three on the gridiron.
In wrestling, he finished his career with 106 victories, earning him induction into the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016.
As a sophomore, Bruney was the OHSAA Division III Sectional runner-up and a district qualifier at 171 pounds, helping the Riders to the OVAC Class 3A championship (fourth overall) and a runner-
up finish in the D-III Sectional.
As a junior he took second in the sectional and third in the district to qualify for the OHSAA Division III State Tournament and he was the runner-up at 189 pounds in the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament. That year, Ferry was OVAC Overall and Class 3A champions, D-III Sectional champions, D-III District runner-up and fourth in the OHSAA D-III State Tournament.
As a senior, he became an All-Ohioan by placing third in the OHSAA Division III State Tournament, going 4-1 in Columbus to cap a 34-3 record season. He placed third in the sectional and first in the
district to advance, and also was the OVAC champion at 189 pounds. The Riders were OVAC overall and 3A champions and took third as a team in the D-III State Tournament.
Bruney received the George Kovalick Wrestling Scholarship from the Ohio Valley Wrestling Coaches Association as a senior.
On the football field, Bruney excelled as a 6-0, 215-pound center-defensive tackle.
As a senior co-captain, he played a major role in the historic 1998 season which marked the Riders’ first OHSAA playoff appearance, a No. 2 ranking in the final AP Division IV State Poll and was the highest scoring team in school history (580 points for a 52.7 per game average). After a 10-0 regular season, the Riders fell to perennial powerhouse Youngstown Ursuline in the playoffs.
Bruney was named second team on the AP All-Ohio Division IV squad along with first team All-Eastern District D-IV and All-OVAC Class AAA. He also represented MFHS in the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game and was an All-Valley Scholar Athlete.
