Balgo relishes getting his chance to play in OVAC all-star game

WHEELING — Micky Balgo has run the gamut of emotions as the 79th annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game is about to unfold.

Originally not listed on the Ohio roster, the recently graduated St. Clairsville senior was named as a replacement when another player had to withdraw from participating.

When he was added to the Buckeyes’ roster, he continued a legacy that may not be rivaled. His selection marks the eighth time a player from his family had taken part in the mid-summer classic at Wheeling Island Stadium.

According to his bio sheet information, It all started back in 1950 when his grandfather — Robert Bonar — started the family trend. His uncle — John Bonar — played in the 1976 game, while his cousin — Jordan Bonar — also participated. Then his uncle — Troy Balgo — played in the 1984 game and his father — Dan Balgo — two years later. Completing the lengthy list are his brothers — Will (2021) and Joey (2022).

“I didn’t know all of that,” he said prior to practice Thursday afternoon. “I knew my two brothers played in the game and I always thought they would have one-up on me. “I’m grateful to have this opportunity.”

The 6-3, 240-pound Balgo said he was at work when he got the call.

“It was a great honor when I was called and asked to represent my school and my state,” he said.

Now, instead of watching the game like he did in 2021 and 2022, he will be a part of the action.

“I remember when Will was playing and he got a touch on the 3-yard line, but didn’t score, I was making fun of him for not scoring. Then, I remember going when Joey was playing. He didn’t do much. He was a lineman.”

He said the Ohio coaches have hit in a fullback set and also rotating at linebacker.

“This week has been incredible,” he offered. “Getting to know a lot of the guys that I’m playing with has been great. I’ve made some many new friends and these are all cool guys to be a teammate with.”

Balgo will don the No. 7 jersey for Ohio when the game kicks off at 7:15 Saturday night at Wheeling Island Stadium.
