WSO to hold flood benefit concert on July 10

WHEELING — The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra is offering its assistance in Ohio County flood recovery through its art.

The WSO will partner with several local musicians July 10 to put on Community in Concert: A Night of Music for Flood Relief. Uniting string players alongside members of the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra, local string teachers, the WSO Community Choir and local band Company Caravan, all proceeds from this performance will go toward the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley Flood Relief Fund.

“The Monday after the floods, the WSO staff sat around the table and asked ourselves what we could do to help our community,” WSO Music Director John Devlin said. “Our motto at the WSO is ‘your community in concert,’ and we decided that would be the most meaningful way we can give back – providing music and healing for our community, while raising money for those who need it the most.”

Taking place at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church at 7:30 p.m. July 10, the concert will feature a wide variety of classical, traditional and popular music. Much of the program will consist of songs about West Virginia, a tribute to how the Ohio Valley has rallied around those impacted by the floods.

The concert will start with a performance by Wheeling-based rock band Company Caravan, followed by the WSO Community Choir. Next, string players from the Wheeling Symphony, the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra, and local string instructors will take the stage. Maestro John Devlin will conduct the concert alongside the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra director Shaun Hancher. All ensembles will join together at the end for the finale.

The concert is free of charge, but a $20 donation is requested. Victims of the flooding are invited to come free of charge and enjoy an evening of music and reprieve.

“When something as tragic as the June 14 floods occur, it’s so easy to feel helpless,” Devlin says. “It has been so inspiring to see the community pitch in and try to alleviate some of the trauma our friends and neighbors have experienced. Our hope is that we can give back with what we do best: providing music and connection to our community.”
