Martins Ferry knocks off Union Local in volleyball
MARTINS FERRY — Union Local and Martins Ferry hooked in a thriller Monday night inside Tolbert Gymnasium with the Purple Riders claiming a 5-set victory in high school volleyball action.
The visiting Jets won the first game 25-18 before the Purple Riders drew even with a 25-19 nod. Martins Ferry also won the third game 25-22 before Union Local caused a fifth set with a 25-12 triumph in the fourth game. In the deciding game, the Purple Riders posted a 15-8 win.
Giana Chirpas paced Martins Ferry with 18 kills, seven digs, three blocks and four service aces, while Nicole Hammerquist added 10 kills and a trio of blocks. Maddie Lucas charted nine kills and 10 digs. SJ Koller had 38 digs; Olivia Harkness six service aces and 19 assists; and Lexi Carte eight kills and 10 digs.
Ameera Saunders logged 18 kills and 13 digs, while Laken Vinskovich added 15 kills and 19 digs. Delaney Butler added 35 assists and 24 digs. Myah Martin charted 10 digs and Alli Kellaway had four service aces.
Linsly Defeats Shadyside In Five-Set Battle
WHEELING — The Cadets managed to hold on Monday against the Shadyside Tigers inside Stifel Field House, defeating the visitors in five sets. 27-25, 25-12, 17-25, 18-25, 15-13.
Aubrey Nippert led Shadyside with 13 kills, and with three aces. She also had 19 digs, second on the team to Ava Mercer’s 34.
Ali Weatherson had 33 assists for the Tigers.
Addasyn Melanko and Giovanna HInes each had nine kills. Hines also had two blocks.

St. Clairsville Tops Field
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils had a trio of medalists in winning a 5-team match Monday at Belmont Hills Country Club. Beau Mooney, Olivia Baker and Mason Conway all shot 1-over-par 37 as the Red Devils totalled 149 as a team.
Barnesville was second at 156 as Hayden Treadway carded a 38. Union Local nipped Martins Ferry 177-178 for third as Bam Porter led the Jets with a 41. Nolan Zambori also carded a 41 for the Purple Riders. Magnolia was fifth at 191 as Jaxon Poe shot 45.

Steubenville Blanks Linsly
STEUBENVILLE — Joey Rice scored off an assist by Landon Bowers as Big Red (2-0) blanked the Cadets.
JJ Lamantia had two saves for Steubenville.
Max Iglesias had 11 saves for Linsly.
Steubenville plays Thursday at East Liverpool.
