MORRISTOWN — Colton McKivitz has never forgotten where he came from. A group at Union Local made sure that the Jets Nation never forgets what the current starting right tackle for the San Francisco 49ers has done for his alma mater. A special tribute to one of the best to ever wear a UL football uniform was finished in time for Friday night’s season opener.
The Colton McKivitz Mural on the field house was recently completed, thanks to a number of people. The Jets debut against Warren JFK in a 7 o’clock kickoff.
“During the inaugural Colton McKivitz Golf Classic, the Union Local Touchdown Club announced a thank you to Colton. They commissioned work to be done on the field house in his honor and to recognize the retirement of his No. 53 UL jersey number,” the UL Touchdown Club said in an email. That is a number he would also wear in college at WVU.”
Ed Tacosik and Joe Thompson, of the UL Touchdown Club, spearheaded the project. Scott Hagan — the Barn Artist — was brought in to transform the front of the field house.
“We started with Scott last year with a mural of a player busting through the wall. That player wears number 59 to mark the first year of Union Local Football,” the email continued.
According to reports, during the painting of the mural, Hagan and Tacosik collaborated on special ways to commemorate the retirement of the 53. The number was retired in 2019. It was the first in school history and to date the only number ever retired at the Belmont County School.
“Scott and Ed had a vision on making it special. When you look around sport arenas the honored are always spotlighted. We needed to do that for Colton.” commented UL Touchdown Club President, Joe Thompson.
Tacosik is the proprietor of Logotek Signs. He and Hagan bounced ideas back and forth with Thompson on how to put the final vision together.
Friday night when the Jets take the field, the Jet Faithful will see the final product. A permanent display of the McKivitz No. 53 in UL red and white shining bright with a spotlight for all to see.
The project was completed under the direction of the UL Touchdown Club with the generous support of the Barn Artist, Logotek Signs and Diperna Electric and Security and Surveillance.
Through the golf classic, McKivitz was able to donate a huge amount for improvements to the football program’s weightroom at the field house.
