Red Devils win as Ohio teams hit the links in W.Va.
MOUNDSVILLE — Five Ohio golf teams hopped across the river to join one West Virginia team Thursday as Magnolia, Shadyside, St. Clairsville, Bridgeport, Martins Ferry and Caldwell squared off in a six-team match in Moundsville Country Club, with the Red Devils coming out on top.
In a Par-36, eight-hole outing, St. Clairsville’s Mason Conway was the day’s medalist, carding a 37 with birdies on holes six and eight. Three golfers finished right on his tail with 38’s, including two on his own team. Maverick Malin and Olivia Baker each shot 38’s, while Beau Mooney carded a 40 to reach a team total of 153, tops in the six-team field.
Martins Ferry’s Nolan Zambori also finished at 38 strokes, leading his Purple Riders to a team total of 162, good for second-lowest.
Caldwell was next at 169, followed by Shadyside’s 178. The Tigers were paced by Bradon O’Grady, who shot a 41.
Bridgeport and Magnolia each finished at 207 as a team. Magnolia’s top performer was Aiden Fluharty with a 49; Bridgeport’s was Roma Sauvageot with an identical total.
Red Riders Finish Atop Tri-Match
WELLSBURG – Weir fared well on the fairways Thursday, coming out in front against Brooke and Oak Glen in an 18-hole tri-match at Highland Spring Golf Course.
Weir finished at a 322 as a team, Brooke a 332, and Oak Glen at a 395.
Weir’s Isaiah Smith was the medalist for the day, carding a 76. He was joined by teammates Evan Baker (81), Guy Meneely (82) and Evan Kaczmarek (83) to reach their team total.
Brooke’s best outing came from Parker McMahon, who shot a 78.
Oak Glen’s Zack Jenkins shot a 91 to pace the Golden Bears.
Weir moves to 5-1 in match play. The Red Riders will be back in action on Monday, August 18 when they host Toronto, Beaver Local, and Madonna at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course.
