River collects sweep; Ferry falls in opener

BARNESVILLE — River swept past host Barnesville Monday night in high school volleyball action inside the Greenhouse. The scores were 26-24, 25-18 and 25-23.

Hallie Hammel had 10 kills and 14 digs to lead the Pilots. Mallarie Maddy nine kills and a dozen digs. Zoey Fox charted 29 assists, 14 digs, three aces and two blocks, while Maci Isaly 27 assists. Aubrey Fetty had 16 digs and three aces.

Martins Ferry Drops Opener

CAMBRIDGE — The debuting Purple Riders fell to Cambridge in high school volleyball action Monday night. The Bobcats prevailed 25-22, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-23.

Giana Chirpas recorded 26 kills and blocked a pair of shots for the Purple Riders. Nicole Hammerquist added 14 kills and four blocks.

Harrison Central Gets The

Better Of Buckeye Local

CONNORVILLE–Harrison Central and Buckeye Local battled through five sets, with the Huskies twice coming from a set down to win their first match of the season 19-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-18, 15-12.

Buckeye took the first set 25-19 and seemed to have the momentum on its side, also capturing the lead in the second set.

The visitors buckled down behind Leah and Hannah O’Grady and some solid hitting from freshman Emma Jarvis, taking Set Two 26-24, with scores of 20-25, 25-18 and finally 15-12 to follow.

“We need to learn how to win,” Buckeye Local head coach Abbey Wilson said. “We were up and let them come back in that second set.

“Harrison has a young team and played well. It was definitely a tough loss and we are obviously disappointed in the outcome. However, we won’t let this first loss determine the trajectory of our season.”

Senior hitter Jenna DelVecchio led the team in both kills and aces while Karlie Glover did the defensive dirty work, leading the team in digs.

Buckeye is back in action tonight at Indian Creek while Harrison Central hosts Catholic Central in Cadiz.

Weir First In Tri-Match

NEW CUMBERLAND — The Red Riders finished on top Monday at Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course in a tri-match with Beaver Local and Toronto.

Weir’s Guy Meneely finished with an even Par 36 to take home medalist honors in the nine-hole course. He was joined by Evan Kaczmarek (40), Isaiah Smith (41), and Jonny Horstman (44) to make a team total of 161.

Beaver Local finished at 170 strokes as a team. Owen Hill led the team, carding a 39. Toronto finished at 191, with Hank Bodnar shooting a 43.

Weir will be back in action on Thursday, returning to Mountaineer’s Woodview Golf Course for an 18-hole tri-match against Brooke and Oak Glen.

St. Clairsville Wins

Four Matches

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils shot a 149 Monday on the Belmont Hills County Club layout, with Mavrik Malin, Olivia Baker and Beau Mooney each carding a 37. Mason Conway was a shot back at 38.

Barnesville was second with a 159. The Shamrocks’ Hayden Treadway earned medalist honors with a 36.

Landen Hanasky and Bam Porter each fired a 45 as Union Local took third at 183

Shadyside was fourth with 197. Brandon O’Grady shot 46.

Bridgeport was led by Connor Nelson and Evan Clark who both carded 54 as the Bulldogs finished at 223.

MORRISTOWN — The Jets were defeated by the Zeps on Saturday, 3-0.

Ameera Saunders led Union Local with 14 kills and 15 digs. Brooklyn Burley had 14 digs, and Laken Vinskovich and Myah Martin each had a dozen. Vinskovich added nine kills.

Delaney Butler served up 27 assists for the Jets.
