St. Clairsville boys’ golf finishes third in district

ZANESVILLE — St. Clairsville’s bid at back-to-back Ohio Division II state golf tournament appearances came up a little short Monday at the sun-soaked EagleSticks Golf Course.

The youthful Red Devils, who won the sectional title last week with a junior and four sophomores, finished in third place with a four-man total of 310. However, that was well behind Indian Valley and River View which carded 291 and 295, respectively. Only the top two teams advance to the state tournament.

Barnesville tied Maysville for third with scores of 311. Martins Ferry finished seventh at 331.

Individually, no local golfers qualified as just the top two players not on qualifying teams advanced. Those were Maysville’s duo of Gator Nichols (71) and Hoyt Dodson (72).

The Shamrocks’ Brady Gallagher had the lowest score of the locals as he finished at 73. That was one stroke away from moving on. The Red Devils’ Maverick Malin and Ryan Mooney each shot 74. Dylan Pielech led the Purple Riders with a 77.

St. Clairsville’s Mason Conway fired an 80, while Beau Mooney was two shots back of his teammate.

Also scoring for Barnesville were Hayden Treadway and Dylan Gallagher at 75 and Graham Spence at 88.

Rounding out Martins Ferry’s scorers were Hunter Shutler (81), Nolan Zambori (83) and Connor Best (90).

Union Local’s duo of Lincoln Smith (80) and Landen Hanasky (88) also competed.
