The River Pilots hosts Cameron Thursday night at Flannery Field

Teams haven’t played since 1965 as Pilots hold 5-2-1 lead in series

HANNIBAL — The halfway point of the high school football season begins tonight in Ohio as River hosts Cameron on the artificial surface at Martin Flannery Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 o’clock.

This will be the ninth all-time meeting, but the first since 1965 with the Dragons (2-0) holding a 5-2-1 advantage in the series, which dates back to 1958 when Cameron won 7-2. In fact, the Dragons won the first five meetings (1958-62) while the Pilots (3-1) prevailed in 1963 and 1965. The two tied in 1964.

River had scored 75 points in the prior meetings, one more than Cameron, which is ranked No. 2 in W.Va. Class A. The Dragons were state runnersup last winter.

The Pilots have defeated Perry Traditional from Pittsburgh (36-12), Buckeye Local (21-12) and Magnolia (42-0) last week. The lone blemish, a loss to county rival Monroe Central (21-14) in a game they led 14-0.

Cameron, which had its week 2 game with Expression Prep Academy canceled, has beaten Clay-Battelle (22-16) and St. Marys (40-2) last week at Dragon Field.

Brooke at Indian Creek

WINTERSVILLE — The Bruins (1-2) head across the Ohio River to Kettlewell Memorial Stadium to face the host Redskins (4-0) for the 16th time, with Indian Creek leading the all-time series, 9-6. However, Brooke has won three of the last four meetings, losing 30-24 last year in Wellsburg.

The series began in 2002.

The Bruins are coming off their first win of the campaign last week at Cambridge (24-14). They were blanked in their first two outings by Beaver Local (26-0) and Linsly (42-0).

Meanwhile, Indian Creek has rolled past Cambridge (35-6), East Liverpool (37-19), Union Local (23-15) and Weir (46-22) last week after leading 42-0 at the half. However, those four teams are a combined 3-12.

East Liverpool at St. Clairsville

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils (3-1) host the Potters on Homecoming 2025 Friday night at Red Devil Stadium.

This is a battle of teams headed in different directions as St. Clairsville has won three straight — Brownsville, Pa. (49-13), Beaver Local (38-7) and Linsly (24-14) — after dropping its opener at Creston Norwayne (47-27).

East Liverpool, meanwhile, won its opener over Carrollton (23-12) but have lost three straight — Indian Creek (37-19), Salem (56-20) and last week to Beaver Local (21-12). Those four teams are a combined 11-5.

Bridgeport at Magnolia

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Bulldogs (1-3) will trek to Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Memorial Stadium to renew acquaintances with the Blue Eagles (0-2). This will be the seventh all-time meeting — the first since 1979 — as Magnolia leads 4-2 (1912-14, 1977). Bridgeport has won the last two (1978-79).

The Bulldogs lost their opener at Frontier (36-13) but bounced back to win at Shenandoah (22-20) in week 2. However, they have dropped games to East Palestine (28-21) and Steubenville Catholic (22-13) since.

The Blue Eagles fell at Wirt County (47-12) and to River (42-0).

Toronto at Oak Glen

NEW MANCHESTER — The Red Knights (4-0) and Golden Bears (3-0) hook up in a meetin’ of the unbeatens in the northern panhandle Friday night.

Toronto has run roughshod over Southern Local (42-0), Lowellville (34-6), Wellsville (49-19) and Newcomerstown (26-16). Those four are, however, a combined 4-16.

Oak Glen owns wins over Weir (32-14), St. Marys (43-18) and Belpre (43-0) last week. Those three have won-lost marks of 2-8.

Martins Ferry at Lucas

LUCAS — The Purple Riders (1-2) make another long road trip this week to Richland County near Mansfield to battle the host Cubs (2-2).

Martins Ferry, after having its 55-0 win over Expression Prep Academy disqualified, defeated Malvern (35-6), but have found the going tough the last two weeks in setbacks to West Virginia-top ranked Independence (35-14) and Edison (48-20).

Lucas stopped a two-game slide last week — Hillsdale (3-0) and Danville (26-14) — with a rout of Vanlue (62-0) that set a school record for points in a game. The previous mark of 61 came against River in 2018. The Cubs blanked Plymouth (51-0) in their opener.

IN OTHER games of interest, Akron North (1-3) travels south to Wagner Field in Cadiz to meet host Harrison Central (0-4); Bellaire (2-2) welcomes Cambridge (0-4) to Nelson Field; Buckeye Local (1-3) entertains Carrick (1-3) at World War II Memorial Stadium in Yorkville; and Warren Local (1-3) visits Jets Stadium in Morristown to meet Union Local (2-2).

On Saturday, Shadyside (2-2) journeys to Portsmouth Notre Dame (4-0).
