St. C.’s Baker tied for fifth at state golf tournament
SPRINGBORO — St. Clairsville’s Olivia Baker is hoping for some rain showers on Tuesday.
The senior is tied for fifth place after the first day of the Ohio Division II girls’ state golf tournament at the Heatherwoode Golf Club. She shot a 2-over-par 73.
“I played pretty well. My putter was really on,” she said in a telephone interview Tuesday evening. “It feels great knowing that I have a chance … a shot at winning. It’s an amazing feeling.”
The forecast for Tuesday in southwestern Ohio calls for rain, which is exactly what Baker is hoping for.
“For some reason, I usually play better when it rains,” she admitted. “Hopefully, I can keep my grips dry.”
When asked what she learned from playing a practice round Sunday on the course, she replied, “There is a lot of water and I probably shouldn’t use my driver a lot.”
Her round included a 4-over-par 40 on the front nine before she blistered the par-35 back nine with a 33. That was tied for the lowest score of the day on the back nine with Madeira’s Ellie Hartung who shot 71 and is tied for second with Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy’s Sophia Fink.
Eva Lim, of Columbus Academy, carded a 70 (36-34) to hold the lead. Chagrin Falls’ Elizabeth Pollock sits in fourth with a 72. Baker is tied with St. Peter’s Chaeyeon (Joy) Kim.
In today’s final 18-hole round, Baker is set to tee off from Hole No. 1 at 10:50 a.m. She is paired with Kim and Fink.
