ST. CLAIRSVILLE — West Virginia trailed Ohio 1-0 after 40 minutes of action Sunday during the annual OVAC Senior Showcase girls’ soccer all-star match.
However, the Mountaineers tied things on a goal by Wheeling Park’s Hailey Hastings in the 69th minute and then outscored the Buckeyes 3-1 in the shootout for a 2-1 victory on the artificial pitch inside windy and chill-filled Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville.
“Today was a lot of fun. You see all these girls throughout the season, but when you finally get a chance to coach them, it was exciting,” Wheeling Central head coach Bill Konkle, who guided the Maroon Knights to a W.Va. Class A/AA state championship, said. “The end result worked out perfectly.”
Steubenville’s Bailee Beall gave Ohio a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when her shot from the top of the box to the left of Oak Glen goalkeeper Cameron Michaud tickled the twine.
The match remained that way as West Virginia continually possessed the ball in the Ohio end of the field, but couldn’t get a quality scoring opportunity against the tough defense.
Finally, Hastings broke free down the middle of the field near the top of the box.
She dribbled in with a defender hounding her, but her right-footed shot rolled along the turf and into the left corner of the net against Steubenville’s Sadie Edwards.
Neither team would dent the scoreboard in the final 11 minutes as the shootout was prompted.
Both teams scored in the opening round as Weir’s Madelyn Cramer and Beall each found the net. Wheeling Central’s Gianna Konkle picked the top right corner of the net to put the Mountaineers ahead 2-1. That would be enough as Parkersburg South goalkeeper Emilee Owens watched two shots go over top of the cage and a third hit the post.
Oak Glen’s Macy Hartung sealed the win with a goal on the final shot.
“We did a very good job of possessing the ball and not letting Ohio get many scoring chances,” Coach Konkle said. “We had a bunch of talented kids which made it nice.”
Owens was voted West Virginia’s Defensive Player of the Match, while Hastings was the Offensive Player of the Match. Beall was Ohio’s Offensive Player of the Match, with Columbiana’s Madison Janis the Defensive Player of the Match.
Wheeling Central’s Seneca Heller was named the OVAC Class 1A/3A Player of the Year, while Beaver Local’s Peyton Dunn was the Class 4A Player of the Year and Wheeling Park’s Julia Dunaway the Class 5A Player of the Year.
Beaver Local’s Elizabeth Connor was the Girls Coach of the Year.
