High School Roundup: Riders, Dragons pick up wins
MARTINS FERRY — The Martins Ferry Purple Rider girls basketball team picked up a decisive win inside Tolbert Gymnasium on Thursday against the visiting Barnesville Shamrocks, Ferry taking a 54-19 victory.
Martins Ferry led 22-2 after the first quarter and 33-8 at halftime.
10 different Purple Riders scored on Thursday, led by Giana Chirpas with 11 points. Savanah Koller scored 10, and Maddie Lucas scored eight.
Lydia Welch led Barnesville with seven points.
Martins Ferry is now 3-2 on the year. Barnesville is 2-5.
Cameron 52, Clay Battelle 33
CAMERON — The Dragons stepped up in the second half to defend their home court Thursday against the Clay Battelle CeeBees.
The two teams were tied 13-13 after the first quarter, and Cameron led 27-22 at halftime, but the Dragons really soared out of the break.
Cameron’s defense held Clay Battelle to 11 second half points while they ran away with the victory. Kendra Thomas led the Dragons with 20 points, while Addison Stern scored 11 and Macey Bertram scored nine.
Ali Hellyer led Clay Battelle with 13 points.
Cameron is 2-0 on their new season.
Cambridge 36, St. Clairsville 28
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils fell at home to the Bobcats, who were led by 25 points by Cami Moore.
Bryce Powell scored nine points for St. Clairsville. Gracie Gray scored eight.
