Local officials selected to officiate state championship

WHEELING — A local OVAC football crew has been selected to officiate the W.Va. Class AAAA championship game between Morgantown and Martinsburg on Friday at noon at Laidley Field in Charleston.

The crew consists of Referee Bob Mills (Belmont), Umpire Terry Huffman (Wheeling), Line Judge Chris Case (Wheeling), Linesman Lance Rice (St. Clairsville), Back Judge Jimmy Sperlazza (Wellsburg), Side Judge Vince Levi (Martins Ferry), and Field Judge Troy Fitzpatrick (Barnesville).

Sam Jones was selected to be the referee on the OHSAA Division IV State Championship game between Shelby and Cleveland Glenville. The game will be played this Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. Jones is a teacher, coach and athletic director at Buckeye Local High School. He is also the OVAC Football Commissioner. This will be his fifth state championship football game. He was also selected to umpire an OHSAA Baseball state championship game last June.

He and his wife of 35 years, Kelly, reside in Tiltonsville.
