Monarchs, Patriots prevail at National Guard Invitational; Seminoles down Tigers

WHEELING — A pair of local schools finished atop the awards podium Tuesday at the National Guard Invitational swim meet inside the Wheeling Park Natatorium.

John Marshall easily outdistanced the girls field with 172 points, while Wheeling Park won the boys portion with 169.

GIRLS

The Monarchs picked up five gold medals as Zoe Zervos won the 50 Freestyle (26.94) and Adah Aubrey the 100 Backstroke (1:07.38) won individual events, while the 200 IM Relay team of Adah, Sarah Hess, Seanna Leyland and Savannah Potts touched the wall in 2:05.85; the 200 Freestyle foursome of Aubrey, Hess, Ella Finley and Zervos won in 1:51; and the 400 Freestyle of Zervos, Potts, Finley and Leyland won in 4:14.16.

Barnesville’s Lic McCrate was a double winner as she claimed the 100 Breaststroke in 1:10.19 and the 200 IM in 2:26.97.

Wheeling Central’s Sarah Manning claimed the 200 Freestyle in 2:17.70 and Wheeling Park’s Molly George took the 100 Butterfly in 1:08.76. St. Clairsville’s Ryah Newell swam to first in the 100 Freestyle in 1:00.83.

Parkersburg South was second with 92 points, followed by St. Clairsville (81), Wheeling Central and Wheeling Park who tied for fourth with 77 each.

BOYS

The Patriots won the title despite only having one champion — the 400 Freestyle Relay of Roman Maxwell, Jacob Walters, Connor Kizminski and Brady Bowie who timed out in 3:45.63.

The Monarchs’ Wyatt Jefferson was a double winner as he splashed to titles in the 100 Breaststroke (1:01.90) and 200 IM (2:12.16).

Jefferson also swam legs on the winning 200 IM Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay teams. He was joined in the 200 IM by Evan Harrison, Dalton Brown and Hadden Garvin with a time of 1:47.07. He joined Gabryel Buscko, Brodie Baker and Harrison in winning the 200 Free in 1:38.69.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Valley 54, Parkersburg Christian 49

PARKERSBURG — The Lumberjills took home a victory in the 29th Mary ‘O’ Crusaderette Classic on Tuesday, dispatching Parkersburg Christian behind a big second-half effort.

Valley turned a 29-17 halftime deficit into a victory in no small part due to senior Laken Dawson, who scored 10 points in the third quarter alone, ending her day with 24 points and earning the Player of the Game award at the conclusion of the contest.

Valley had trimmed the deficit to 28-27 going into the fourth quarter.

Michaela Miller scored nine points for Valley, and Aubree Mason scored eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Monroe Central 66, Shadyside 29

WOODSFIELD — Cooper Howell scored 20 points and Corbin Farnsworth scored 16 as the Seminoles took down the Tigers on Tuesday.

Hunter Habig joined his Monroe Central teammates in double figures with 11. The Seminoles led 15-6 after the first quarter, and 33-15 at halftime.

Michael Hendershot led Shadyside with 12 points.

Beaver Local 65, Brooke 58

WELLSBURG — Andrew Murdock poured in 27 points Tuesday for the Bruins, but it was the Beavers who prevailed behind 22 points from Matthew Anderson.

Crosby Morris joined Murdock in double figures with 13 points. Beaver led 29-23 at the half.

Harrison Central 64, Buckeye Local 52

CADIZ — The Huskies ran away with their game against the Panthers in the third quarter Tuesday, stretching a 29-24 halftime lead into a 50-36 advantage going into the fourth.

Bryson Kamarec led Harrison Central with 22 points, while Austin Dulkoski scored 15 and Brady Hyre scored 12.

Kyle Kirkland scored 17 to lead Buckeye Local. Rylan Walker scored 15 and Hayden Wilhelm scored a dozen.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

East Liverpool 57, Harrison Central 49

LaNese Andrews scored 34 points as the Potters rolled past the Huskies.

Mikayla Pelegreen led Harrison Central with 13 points. Kelsey Powes added 10.

Monroe Central 57, Caldwell 36

Maci Isaly led four Seminoles in double digits with 15, while Miley Bommer added 13. Mayzie Emery and Brylee McFrederick evenly divided 20.
