Steubenville rolls past Linsly, 67-19

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red girls’ basketball team left no doubt against Linsly.

Big Red built a 30-point lead at halftime on its way to defeating the Cadets 67-19, via mercy rule Thursday night inside the Crimson Center.

“We talked about our defense creating our offense and getting out into transition,” Big Red (3-0) head coach Angie Forte said. “We wanted to play good solid defense. We wanted to box out and rebound. We wanted to let our defense create our offense. We did a good job of that.”

Big Red outscored the visitors, 24-6, in the second half.

Offensively for Big Red, Nyla McShan netted a game-high 17 points. Also, Lucy Sacoccia contributed 13 points, Mikah Taylor tallied 12 and Phynyx Fleming finished with 11.

For Linsly, Alejandra Fernandez delivered a team-high nine points, while Laura Valderas added eight and Carla Sanchez scored two.

River 35, Toronto 27

HANNIBAL — Ava Wohnhas scored 18 points to lead the Pilots past the visiting Red Knights.

Bayleigh Trifonoff added 10 points for River.

Jayne Reeves had nine points for Toronto.

Harrison Central 41, East Liverpool 34

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Huskies made it two wins in two nights as Kara Blackburn and Emily Cope had nine points each.

Caldwell 53, Shadyside 38

SHADYSIDE — The Tigers got off to a slow start as they trailed the visiting Redskins 16-3 after one quarter and never got back into the game.

Kaci Tsoras and Alli Weatherson led Shadyside with 14 points each.

Leah Franklin had 14 for Caldwell.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Harrison Central 54, Brooke 13

CADIZ — The Huskies exploded for a 29-0 lead after one quarter as they connected on six three-point field goals and had six players crack the scoring column.

Emily Cope, a transfer from Indian Valley, led Harrison Central with 12 points, two more than Mikayla Pelegreen. Kelsey Powers chipped in nine and Kara Blackburn eight.

Madonna 37, Valley 34

WEIRTON — The homestanding Blue Dons rallied after being held off the scoreboard in the first quarter to pull off the win over the Lumberjills.

Madonna trailed 9-0 after the first quarter, and 16-11 at halftime. The Blue Dons scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull ahead.

Adalynne Welsh scored 11 to lead Madonna, nine coming in the second half.

Sophie Brady added nine for Madonna, her points coming via three fourth-quarter 3-pointers. All four of Madonna’s 3-point makes came in the fourth quarter.

Laken Dawson put through 15 points for Valley, while Michaela Miller scored eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Caldwell 50, Barnesville 38

BARNESVILLE — The visiting Redskins outscored the Shamrocks 10-3 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Dalton Egnot led all scorers for Caldwell with 18 points.

Aidan Caldwell had 11 for Barnesville, while Evan Carpenter and Brody McFarland evenly divided 16.

BOWLING

Brooke Sweeps Wheeling Park

The Bruins posted a 1791 to 1653 victory over the Patriots in boys’ action as Brady Yost rolled a 237 game and a 391 series. Wheeling Park’s Aaron Chao had a 166 and 312.

On the girls’ side, Kaylee Tuttle had games of 169 and 158 for a 327 series to propel the Bruins to a 1344 to 1267 victory.

Shelby McKee had a 127 game for Brooke, while Morgan Oleksiak had a 245 series.
