John Marshall wrestling punches ticket to W.Va. Div. I State Duals

MOUNDSVILLE — John Marshall punched its ticket to West Virginia Division I State Dual Meet Tournament Saturday by defeating Fairmont Senior and Wheeling Park in a triangular match inside the Moundsville Fieldhouse.

The Monarchs roared past the Polar Bears, 54-24, and rallied by the Patriots, 38-35.

Waylon Howard (113), Nathan Hughes (120) and Clayton Dugas (126) all recorded two pins, while Kai Johnson (165), JT Morris (190) and Gavin Myers (215) won both of their matches.

Levin Clegg supplied the winning points against the Patriots with a pin.

The W.Va. State Duals are Feb. 6-7 at the W.Va. State Fairgrounds in Lewisburg.

Union Local Wins Yinger Title

NELSONVILLE — The Jets finished with four individual champions in piling up 225.5 points to win the Steve Yinger Memorial Invitational at Nelsonville-York High School.

Cole Rogers (120), Gamble Gossett (126), Gunnar Gossett (165) and Kolten Snyder (215) were titlists, with Gunnar Gossett and Snyder earning pins in the championship finals.

Gamble Gossett, an OVAC Ron Mauck champion last winter, won by technical fall.

Brody Perzanowski (190) dropped a 2-1 tiebreaker decision in the finals to finish second.

Martins Ferry Places Second

NEEWARK — The Purple Riders scored 243.5 points to finish second in the Licking Val;ley Invitational.

Richard Welshans (165) and Tayson Palmer (215) captured individual titles, while Jayce Nixon (113)Colton Nixon (138) and Keenan Lucey (144) all finished second.

Steubenville placed fifth with 218.5 points and saw Beau Hudson (285) win a championship.

Landon Crosier (175) and Landyn Bable (19) each finished as runnerups.

New Lexington won the team title with 290.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Union Local 65, Barnesville 23

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Union Local made it a perfect 10 Saturday with a repeat victory over host St. Clairsville on John Jenkins Court.

Laken Vinskovich kept her torrid scoring with a 29-point effort to pace the Jets (10-0). Ameera Saunders added a dozen and Alli Kellaway finished with eight.

Anna Kain drained three triples for nine points to lead the Red Devils.

Union Local visits Bellaire on Monday.

Martins Ferry 61, Cambridge 17

CAMBRIDGE — The Purple Riders received 17 points each from Giana Chirpas and SJ Koller in rolling past the homestanding Bobcats.

Maddie Lucas and Kassiah Fleming evenly divided 14 markers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

St. Clairsville 75, Coshocton 57

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Griffin Straub led four Red Devils in double figures with a game-high 29 points as the hosts rolled to a victory on John Jenkins Court.

Luke Schafer added 15 while Nico Jacob and Ollie Muhly had 11 each.

Monroe Central 66,

Wheeling Park 53

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Corbin Farnsworth tallied 18 points, Blake Yontz 16 and Cooper 15 as the Seminoles defeated the Patriots inside the ECO Center.

JD Williams led Wheeling Park with 15, one more than Kolten Whitmire. Josh Huffman added 10.

Union Local 44, Barnesville 36

MORRISTOWN — The Jets claimed the Milk Trophy with their win over the visiting Shamrocks inside ‘The Hangar.’

Bam Porter paced Union Local with 12 points. Brody Kerns added 11.

Dylan Blon scored a game-best 16 for Barnesville.

Brooke 69, Harrison Central 56

CADIZ — Andrew Murdock netted a game-high 26 points as the Bruins defeated the Huskies.

Crosby Morris added 17 and Grant Yost scored 10 points with 15 rebounds for Brooke.

Bryson Kamarec led Harrison Central with 13. Brady Hyre chipped in 12.

John Marshall 59, Preston 53

MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs bounced back from a tough loss at Union Local to down the visiting Knights inside the Moundsville Fieldhouse.

Landon Snyder scored 15 points, Jackson Helms added 14 and Preston Watkins contributed 12 for John Marshall.

Magnolia 53, Bellaire 46

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagles made it two wins in two days with a close victory over the visiting Big Reds on Saturday.

Kingston Christen scored 28 for Magnolia, 21 coming in the second half. Noah Hood followed with nine.

Bellaire’s Jace Violet had a big scoring night of his own with 24. Alex Padgett scored 14.

MORRISTOWN — Vinskovich scorched the nets for 27 points and Saunders chipped in 13 as the Jets won the western Belmont County matchup inside ‘The Hangar.’
