MORRISTOWN — Senior Night inside The Hangar was a celebration from the opening tip Wednesday as Union Local bid farewell to their elders statesmen Dylan Verbeck and Bobby Boone in a decisive 66-24 victory over visiting Shadyside.
Verbeck scored eight points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked two shots Wednesday, while Boone scored eight and plucked two steals.
“They’re great kids,” Union Local head coach Zach Delman said of his two seniors. “Great kids. Really enjoy being around them. Super respectful kids, hardworking kids, and they’re just a pleasure to be around, even off the court, they’re fun to mess around with and they’ve got good personalities and I enjoy coaching them.”
Union Local made three of their first four shots Wednesday and turned Shadyside over in bunches to build a 19-3 lead after the first quarter, and a 37-11 lead at halftime.
Bam Porter made three 3’s on his way to 13 points, and Brody Gregor led the team with five assists in addition to eight points.
Union Local was coming off a loss to Shenandoah the night before.
“The energy was great,” Delman said. “You know, it’s great to be able to honor our seniors on this particular night, especially in a bounce-back win after the way we played last night. We played our worst game of our season last night. And it was nice to not have a day of practice after that. I felt like bouncing back with another game and just being able to come out and respond was a good thing for us. And, I was happy to be able to let Dylan and Bobby get out there and have some fun together on senior night. Some of our other players obviously played well.”
Brody Kerns piled up a 18-point, 12-rebound double double to lead Union Local. The Jets performed well on the interior all night, and outrebounded Shadyside 35-17.
“Shadyside’s playing without their post player,” Delman offered. “They lost him to a knee injury a few weeks ago, so they’re a little shorthanded inside and we felt like we had an advantage in there that we wanted to try to exploit a little bit, but overall I was happy with our guard play and we shared the ball. I had us for 19 assists and five turnovers and that’s really good for us. And you know, we gotta do that more often. We need to be more consistent with that effort.”
Bryce Sloan led Shadyside with 13 points. He shot 4-7 from beyond the arc.
“They started out hot,” Shadyside head coach James Edwards said. “We got down early. The name of the game for us all year has been, turnovers have been a big problem. And we started out, I think, with four straight turnovers. Bryce Sloan shot the ball really well. Other than that, it was just a tough game for us. This was a really good team, really well coached team, so credit to them.”
