Martins Ferry claims Buckeye Local Panther Classic title

CONNORVILLE — Martins Ferry held off Indian Valley and Steubenville to win the team title at the annual Buckeye Local Panther Classic wrestling tournament Saturday night. The Purple Riders amassed 222 points which was 19 better than the Braves and 21.5 ahead of Big Red.

Martins Ferry crowned two champions as the Brothers Nixon won at 113 (Jayce) and 138 (Colton). It also had three second-place finishers in Cole Patterson (150), Richard Welshans (165) and Tayson Palmer (215).

Jayce Nixon pinned Steubenville’s Jailen Steave in 4-minutes, 30-seconds in a rematch of their OVAC Ron Mauck championship bout, in which Nixon prevailed 1-0. Older brother Colton earned a 5-1 decision over Bridgeport’s Ax’Zavior Santana.

Caldwell, which finished second to Shadyside in Friday night’s OVAC Bill Hinegardner Class 1A/2A Dual Meet Championships, led the way with three individual champions in Jesse Pemberton (126), Owen Hunt (150) and Adam Bender (165). Pemberton posted a 15-0 technical fall over Bridgeport’s Cole Weekley, while Hunt pinned Patterson in 2:30 and Bender decisioned Welshans 13-6.

Indian Creek had a pair of titlists in Ian Starkey (157) and Luke McMillion (285). Starkey won by technical fall over Indian Valley’s Arian Braun, 15-0, while McMillion outlasted Steubenville’s Beau Hudson, 5-2, in overtime.

John Marshall, Oak Glen and Wheeling Central all had one champ.

The Monarchs’ Milo Ward scored a 14-0 major decision over Oak Glen’s Jordan Tomsic at 106, while the Golden Bears’ Noah Schmidt (215) defeated Palmer 10-4, and the Maroon Knight’s Wyatt Brady (190) pinned John Marshall’s JT Morris in 1:23.

Also winning titles were Hilliard Bradley’s Austin Rohrbach (144) and Gauge Woods (175), along with Indian Valley’s Bronko Braun (120) and Jonathan Alder’s Edward Anderson (132).

Oak Glen (175) took fourth and John Marshall (174) rounded out the top 5. St. Clairsville (160) was sixth.
