Northern panhandle teams qualify 27 for W.Va. state wrestling tourney

WEIRTON — Twenty-seven individuals qualified Saturday for the W.Va. Division II state wrestling tournament by placing in the top four of their respective weight classes during North Region competition inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse on the Weir High School campus.

Oak Glen, which finished second to Williamstown in the team race with 198 points, leads the locals with seven. Weir had six, while Cameron, which finished third in the team standings with 130.5, has five advancing — all champions — as does Wheeling Central. Tyler Consolidated has three and Magnolia one.

The Golden Bears’ Noah Schmidt (215) won his weight class, as did the Dragons’ Maverick Lilley (106), Braxton Birch (132), Marshall Crowe (150), Talen Brown (157) and Eli Tedrow (165). The Red Riders’ Chad Artman (126) also won his weight class.

Wheeling Central had three second-place finishers in Tylique Marshall (113), Dustin Sanner (215) and Dominic Paesani (285).

The state tournament will be held March 5-7 at the Marshall Health Network Arena in Huntington.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ohio Division VI Sectional Co-Final

Monroe Central 67, Buckeye Trail 46

BEALLSVILLE — The second-seeded Seminoles (19-5) set up a Wednesday night with No. 1 Fort Frye as Mayzie Emery netted a game-best 20 points. The game was played at the old Beallsville gymnasium due to a power outage in Woodsfield.

Jacey English added 15 and Brylee McFrederick a dozen. Jersey Eddy led the Warriors with 14, one more than Anna McVicker.

English completed a double-double with 11 rebounds and charted five steals. Emery also dished out nine assists.

Monroe Central and Fort Frye will battle at Caldwell High School. The ball tips at 7.

Ohio Division VII Sectional Co-Final

Frontier 40, River 25

HANNIBAL — The Pilots were held scoreless in the second quarter as the Cougars moved on.

Carleigh Trifonoff led River with 10 points. Zoey Fox added nine.

Anna Bowersock had 17 for Frontier who will meet Caldwell Wednesday night at 6 inside the ECO Center in St. Clairsville.

Regular Season

Wheeling Central 85, Parkersburg Catholic 55

PARKERSBURG — The Maroon Knights picked up a road win to end their regular season slate Saturday against the Crusaders.

Seneca Heller poured in a game-high 28 for the Maroon, while Addie Payton scored 20.

Haley Severns scored 15 and Bella Fitzsimmons added a dozen for Central.

Wheeling Central finishes their regular season with a 17-5 record and will host Weir on Friday in a regional playoff game.

Valley 70, Union 35

MOUNT STORM — The Lumberjills trounced the Tigers on the road Saturday, receiving a 30-point scoring burst from senior Laken Dawson.

Dawson reached her total without attempting a single free throw, knocking down 14 field goals.

Kendall Loy scored 12 for Valley while Erin and Aubree Mason each scored eight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Regular Season

Bridgeport 45, River 40

HANNIBAL — For the second time in less than a week, the Bulldogs took down the Pilots, this time inside the R.L. Potts Gymnasium at River High School.

Jaki Threet scored 20 points and Jaleel Vincent added 13 for Bridgeport.

Crestyn Islay buried five treys for 15 points to pace River.
