All-Eastern District honors several local players and coaches

CAMBRIDGE — The all-Eastern District boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were announced.

The teams are selected by media members from the district based upon nominations from coaches.

Seven coaches were honored as Coach of the Year or co-Coach of the year, while six players received Player of the Year, co-Player of the Year or tri-Player of the Year honors.

BOYS

In Division III, Steubenville’s 5-11 junior Santino Haney was voted the Player of the Year after averaging 22.8 points a game, while his father, Mike Haney, was named the co-Coach of the Year along with Tri-Valley’s Todd McLaughlin.

In Division V, St. Clairsville’s Griffin Straub, an NCAA Division II signee with Indiana, Pa., was selected as the Player of the Year.

The 6-7 senior averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds a game for the Red Devils.

His coach, Ryan Clifford, earned co-Coach of the Year honors with West Muskingum’s Cole Smith.

In Division VI, Bridgeport junior Jaleel Vincent was named a tri-Player of the Year along with Hiland’s Alex Miller and Caldwell’s Dylan Schott. The 6-1Vincent scored at a 22-point clip for the Bulldogs.

The Coach of the Year went to Toronto’s Sean Tucker.

GIRLS

In Division III, Steubenville swept the top honors as senior Nylah McShan was the Player of the Year and head coach Angie Forte was a co-Coach of the Year with Zanesville’s Tyler Hardcastle.

McShan, a Clarion University signee, scored 20.3 points a game.

In Division IV, Indian Creek’s Kaydence Walker was selected the co-Player of the Year with Carrollton’s Kylie Ujcich.

The Redskins’ 5-9 junior averaged 18.2 points a game.

Indian Creek head coach Steve Eft was aco-Coach of the Year with Carrollton’s Makayla Poole.

In Division V, Union Local senior Laken Vinskovich shared co-Player of the Year honors with Elli Wallick of Tuscarawas.

The 6-0 Jet scored 19.5 points and pulled down nearly 10 rebounds a game.

Edison’s Mark Smyth was the Coach of the Year.

In Division VI, Monroe Central’s Troy Baker shared co-Coach of the Year honors with Shenandoah’s Roman Thompson.
