High School Roundup: Ferry’s Magistro Collects Career Victory No. 450 As Purple Riders Sweep Pair
MARTINS FERRY – With a doubleheader sweep of visiting Weir Saturday afternoon, Martins Ferry softball head coach Jerry Magistro picked up his 450th career win. The Purple Riders (5-0) prevailed by scores of 11-8 and 6-4.
In the opener, Monica Tedeschi struck out nine, walked three and scattered 13 hits as the Purple Riders outscored the Red Riders.
Ella Mamone drove in four runs for Martins Ferry. Kendyl Brandon singled twice to plate two runs. Gracie Lucas belted a two-run triple. Makayla Cole had three singles, while Giana Chirpas and Ava Rose had run-producing base hits.
Losing pitcher Eliza Utt had two singles, a triple and a run batted in. Bella Weber had a single and three RBI, while Lila Boleigh and Gracie Trifonoff each added a pair of singles, with Trifonoff recording an RBI. Loganne Barton had two singles and an RBI. Zoe Spencer tripled in a run.
In the nightcap, the hosts scored four times in the bottom of the third and junior pitcher Maddie Lucas made them stand up with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. She yielded four hits.
Gracie Lucas drove in three runs with a pair of sacrifice flys, while Maddie Lucas had a single and double that accounted for a run. Chirpas singled and tripled and Kendyl Brandon had a run-scoring base hit.
Weber singled twice to drive in a pair of runs for Weir (5-2). Barton also singled twice and knocked on a run. Brynn Artman had a double.
Martins Ferry hosts St. Clairsville on Monday.
River 7, Magnolia 1
NEW MARTINSVILLE – Ava Wohnhas continued her torrid start to the season with 15 more strikeouts from inside the circle as the Pilots navigated past the host Blue Eagles. She now has 62 Ks in four games.
She also did damage with her bat with a single and home run that produced four runs. Carlee Winkler had two singles and an RBI, while Addison Lee singled in another.
Magnolia managed five singles by five different players.

GLENVILLE — Playing a doubleheader at Glenville State University on Saturday, the Maroon Knights split their twin-bill, notching a win over the Titans and falling to the Patriots.
Against Gilmer, Sydney Hupp earned the win inside the circle, going the distance and striking out seven for Central.
Bella Rine blasted three doubles as part of a four-hit, two-RBI, three-run day, while Berklee Heller smacked two doubles of her own and drove in two. Olivia Kiaski notched two hits and walked one, scoring three times and driving in two. Maddie Miehle had three hits, all singles, and Morgan Miehle had two hits and drove in two runs. Chloe Groome had two hits and two RBI.
Against Midland Trail, Seneca Heller and Maddie Miehle each hit doubles, while Heller, Hupp and Erin Maxwell each drove in runs.
Fort Frye 5, Barnesville 4
BEVERLY — The Cadets scored a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh to take a home victory over the Shamrocks on Saturday.
Ella Betts pitched for Barnesville, striking out 10. Only two of Fort Frye’s five runs were earned as Barnesville committed six errors Saturday.
Aubrey Johnson notched two hits from the leadoff spot for the Shamrocks, driving in one and scoring one run. Becklee Oliver smacked a double. Betts, Reagan Welch and Roselyne Anderson each had RBI.
BASEBALL
Hiland 1, Wheeling Central 0
BERLIN — The Maroon Knights fell in a hard-fought match against the reigning Division VI Ohio state champion Hawks on Saturday.
Steven Brodegard threw five innings on the mound for Wheeling Central, starting the game and striking out six, surrendering five hits and just one run, but Hiland shut down the Central offense on the other end.
Kade Koroneos pitched the sixth inning for Central, striking out two and walking one.
Brady Ernest and Koroneos each tallied one hit for the Knights.
Union Local 4, Barnesville 3
MORRISTOWN — The Jets escaped with a win over Barnesville, who nearly came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh Saturday, scoring two runs before running out of outs.
Colby Carpenter picked up the win for Union Local, striking out six in 6.2 innings. Jacob Stroud got the last out.
Levi Lucas knocked in two for Union Local.
Keegan Martin doubled for Barnesville, driving in two.
Dylan Blon was saddled with the loss for the Shamrocks on the mound. Blon struck out eight over 4.1 innings.
John Marshall 17, Brooke 5
John Marshall 7, Grafton 1
MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs added two to their win column on Saturday with victories over the Bruins and Bearcats.
Against Grafton, Hayden Hughes finished with two hits and two RBI at the plate from the leadoff spot, and pitched a complete game on the mound, striking out three, walking two, and allowing five hits.
Kayden Knapp and Kain Ankrom hit doubles for John Marshall.
The Monarch offense got busy against Brooke. Mason Markonich had three hits, including two doubles, driving in four RBI from the 3-hole. Knapp tallied three hits, a double and two singles, finishing with three RBI. Ankrom had a two-hit game of his own. Landen Snyder and Jesse McDowell each had two RBI. McDowell finished with a triple and a single.
Aidan Clegg picked up the win for John Marshall, pitching into the fourth inning and striking out two.
