High School Roundup: Linsly Explodes Over Magnolia; Ferry’s Chirpas Reaches 100 Hits

WHEELING – Madison Applegarth and Layla Markwas combined for 14 strikeouts as Linsly (3-1) defeated visiting Magnolia, 11-5, in softball action Tuesday at the Holloway Field Complex on the Linsly campus.

Applegarth earned the win as she fanned eight in her four innings of relief. She allowed two hits and didn’t allow a run. Markwas struck out six in three innings.

Lily Spiker drove in three runs for Linsly with a single and double. Aubrie Joanou doubled in another. Reagan Vansyoc added a single and double, while Hailey Driscoll singled thrice and Kenzie Ghaphery added two singles and an RBI. Alyssa Heath singled in a run, as did Abby Haught and Macy Sustik. Applegarth knocked in two runs.

Audri Quinn blasted a three-run homer for the Blue Eagles. Jessa Anderson singled and slugged a solo home run to account for two RBI.

Wheeling Central 13, Monroe Central 9

WOODSFIELD – The debuting Maroon Knights banged out 15 hits, including a pair of solo home runs by Chloe Groome, who also singled twice.

Seneca Heller knocked in four runs with a pair of singles, while Bella Rine slugged a home run, two singles and plated three runs. Erin Maxwell and Sydney Hupp each singled twice, with Hupp driving in a run.

Maclarin Craft drove in two runs for Monroe Central with a single and double. Kennadi Jorris singled twice to drive in one run while Kenadie Loch hit a solo homer.

Martins Ferry 14, Indian Creek 4, 6 inn.

WINTERSVILLE – The Purple Riders’ Giana Chirpas reached a milestone during their 10-run debut victory as she recorded her 100th career hit. The Ohio University recruit doubled and homered to drive in six runs.

Tori Long doubled and tripled to drive in three runs, while winning pitcher Maddie Lucas tripled twice to plate a run. Gracie Lucas tripled in a run and Mikayla Cole doubled in another. Alivia Reese had a run-scoring single while Kendyl Brandon and Keigan Brandon evenly divided four singles.

Maddie Lucas struck out six, walked one and scattered three hits in four innings inside the circle.

Riley Sadler singled, doubled and drove in a run for Indian Creek.

Martins Ferry travels to Barnesville Wednesday.

River 7, Toronto 2

SARDIS – Ava Wohnhas struck out 14, didn’t walk a Red Knight and permitted just two singles as the Pilots (2-0) built a 5-0 lead. She has now fanned 29 in 14 innings.

Cyla Jeffers knocked in three runs for River with a double. Jayda Kinny-Blair singled and doubled.

Arianna Highsmith had both of Toronto’s two singles.

Shadyside 10, Buckeye Trail 9

OLD WASHINGTON – The Tigers struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to slip past the host Warriors.

Freshman Cam Kolvek singled twice and drove in three runs for Shadyside. Kari Zeroski singled and doubled to knock in one and Emma Gorrell delivered a two-run single, as did Reese Burkhart. Kamryn Parker added an RBI, while winning pitcher Ali Weatherson tripled.

Weatherson went the distance inside the circle, throwing 133 pitches while striking out four and walking five.

Elaine Watson had a three-run homer for Buckeye Trail.

Shadyside is idle until Saturday when St. Clairsville visits for an 11 a.m. twinbill.

University 9, John Marshall 0

MORGANTOWN – The Monarchs (4-1) saw their unbeaten streak halted by the host Hawks in four-and-a-half innings.

John Marshall managed just two singles.

University scored three times each in the second, third and fourth innings.

West Greene, Pa. 9, Cameron 4

CAMERON – Skye Dobbs clubbed a three-run homer and Ava Lemasters drove in a fourth run but it wasn’t enough against the visiting Pioneers.

BASEBALL

John Marshall 8, Parkersburg 7

MOUNDSVILLE – Cain Martin’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh capped a furious rally by the Monarchs (1-1) to stun the Big Reds on Monarch Field.

Martin finished with two hits and three runs batted in, while Hayden Hughes singled and doubled to drive in a pair. Mason Markonich had two singles, a double and an RBI. Landon Snyder singled and doubled, while Jason Astipalitis and Jesse McDowell had run-scoring base hits.

John Marshall next plays Saturday at Brooke against Grafton.

Morgantown 2, Wheeling Park 0

WHEELING – The visiting Mohigans struck for single runs in the second and third innings in blanking the Patriots (0-2).

Nolan Yanchak had two of Wheeling Park’s three singles.

BOYS LACROSSE

Wheeling Central 9, Seton LaSalle 6

Joey Jerrome scored four goals and logged an assist as the Maroon Knights (2-1) picked up a victory. Nino Jerrome scored three times while Bode Burge had two goals and two assists. Grady Mullin and Conor Wood had helpers.

Wheeling Central visits Preston on Friday.
