High School Roundup: River Moves To 3-0, Monarchs Win Close One vs. Big Red

MARIETTA — The River Pilots softball squad moved to 3-0 this season with an impressive win over the Marietta Tigers, River taking a 2-0 lead after two innings and hanging on thanks to another dominant showing by senior pitcher Ava Wohnhas.

Wohnhas struck out 18 batters, walked none, and allowed one hit while going the distance inside the circle.

River managed four hits but got all the runs they needed in the second inning. With Alyvia Bayes and Ja’chelle Hill each singling, Bentleigh Enix allowed them both to go home after lining a base hit to left. A throwing error in the outfield allowed Bayes and Hill to both score.

John Marshall 3, Steubenville 2

MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs snatched the lead late over Big Red on Thursday. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the sixth when Masyn Inclan singled, scoring one run.

Steubenville opened the scoring in the second after Isabella Cadille singled, scoring two runs.

Kaylee White singled down the left field line, which helped John Marshall tie the game at two in the bottom of the fourth.

Lily Dijkstra earned the win for John Marshall Varsity Monarchs. The pitcher allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Cadille took the loss for Steubenville Varsity Big Red. The pitcher went six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, striking out six and walking four.

Cadille led Steubenville with two RBI from the number eight spot in the lineup. Sophia Zorne went 2-for-2 at the plate for Big Red.

Martins Ferry 7, Barnesville 1

MARTINS FERRY — The Purple Riders’ Monica Tedeschi allowed one hit and struck out seven as Ferry cruised to a victory over the visiting Shamrocks.

Martins Ferry managed three hits as a team, but eight Barnesville errors allowed seven Purple Rider runs to come ’round.

Peyton Loudin and Ella Betts combined to pitch six innings Thursday, each striking out four batters. Loudin, Betts and Emma Swan all doubled for the Shamrocks. Loudin drove in Barnesville’s lone run– which was Betts.

Magnolia 7, Frontier 5

NEW MATAMORAS — The Blue Eagles exploded for five runs in the third inning to help them take a permanent lead and take a road win over the Cougars on Thursday.

Magnolia trailed 2-0 going into the top of the third where the Blue Eagles flipped the script on Frontier.

Jessa Anderson, Bella Sockman and Olivia Hohman each had two hits Thursday. Sockman homered and singled, ending with a game-high three RBI, while Anderson doubled and singled, also drawing a walk to reach thrice Thursday.

Sockman and Sophia Alexander each scored twice.

Aerie Varner started in the circle for Magnolia, going the distance and striking out six, allowing five hits.
