High School Roundup: River Softball Remains Perfect Behind Wohnhas; Ferry Rolls
SHADYSIDE – In an early season clash of undefeated high school softball teams, River scored twice in the third and two more times in the fourth to hand Shadyside its first setback in a 4-1 decision at the Mead Township Park Complex.
Senior Ava Wohnhas continued to shine, both inside the circle and at the plate as the Pilots improved to 5-0. She struck out six, didn’t walk a batter and surrendered seven hits. At the plate, she belted a two-run homer.
Jada Kinny-Blair had a two-run single for River.
Cam Kolvek and Kari Zeroski each singled twice for the Tigers (3-1).
Martins Ferry 12, St. Clairsville 1
MARTINS FERRY – The Purple Riders (6-0) remained unbeaten with a four-and-a-half inning rout of the visiting Red Devils.
Ohio University recruit Giana Chirpas drilled a double and home run to drive in four runs. Kendyl Brandon singled three times while Tori Long added a two-run single. Gracie Lucas singled and doubled to produce a run.
Ella Mamone went the distance inside the circle, striking out three, walking a trio and giving up three hits.
Sophia Turner singled in Lily Price who had doubled in the first inning.
Barnesville 14, Union Local 1
MORRISTOWN – Ella Betts singled thrice and homered to account for three runs batted in as the Shamrocks grounded the Jets.
Sophia Carpenter also went deep for the Shamrocks and singled to knock in two runs. Peyton Loudin had a trio of one-base raps and two RBI. Emma Swan drove in two runs with a pair of doubles.
Loudin struck out 10, didn’t walk a batter and scattered three hits.
Myah Martin and Lily Blakley had a double each for Union Local, with Blakley recording the RBI.
Bridgeport 7, Cameron 6
CAMERON – The Bulldogs snapped a 3-all deadlock with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Dragons made things interesting with three in the bottom of the inning before falling short.
Hanna Brewer singled, doubled twice and drove in a run for Bridgeport. She also struck out eight and walked six. Vanessa Zelkowski singled twice, as did Aubrie Zawisa, with the latter driving in two runs.
Cali Lucey produced three runs for Cameron with a single and triple. Peyton Brown had a two-run single and Aubrey Thomas and Edie Hartley had two hits each, with one of Hartley’s being a double.
Magnolia 9, Tyler Consolidated 6
NEW MARTINSVILLE – The Blue Eagles pushed across three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to outscore the visiting Silver Knights.
Jessa Anderson singled twice, doubled and drove in a run for Magnolia, while Sindey Knight had a trio of one-base hits and collected two RBI. Audri Quinn singled, doubled and plated a pair of runs.
Makayla Farrell had a single, a double and two runs batted in for Tyler Consolidated. Rylee Butler doubled in a pair, while Holly Johnson had a run-producing double.
Monroe Central 3, Shenandoah 2
SARASHVILLE – Kennnadi Jorris singled twice to drive in two runs and Allie McFrederick slugged a solo home run as the Seminoles slipped past the host Zeps.
Jadyn Miller singled and doubled twice for Monroe Central. Kamryn Winland picked up the win in relief with four strikeouts in four innings.
BASEBALL
River 5, Shadyside 3
SHADYSIDE – Kaden Hunt fanned 11, walked one and scattered six hits in pitching the visiting Pilots past the Tigers at Fleming Field.
Easton Huntsman singled and doubled to drive in a run for the winners. Cam Abbott, Cooper Roberts and Ty Nething all singled in runs.
Jacob Allen singled three times and knocked in a run. Ryan Collins had an RBI single and Damian Russell doubled.

SHADYSIDE – The Tigers recorded a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Red Devils at the Mead Township Park Complex.
In the opener, Kamryn Parker drove in four runs with a single and home run for Shadyside, while Kolvek slapped a run-scoring triple and Zeroski and Layla Samsa each knocked in a run with a double.
Lily Price singled twice and drove in a run for Shadyside.
In the nightcap, Parker once again drove in four runs with two doubles and a triple. Zeroski singled twice and doubled to knock in three runs, while Kolvek, Weatherson, Brianna Harris and Emma Gorrell each singled twice, with Harris recording a pair of RBI.
Gracie Miller drove in two runs with a pair of singles for the Red Devils. Bailey Berry had an RBI single.
