High School Roundup: John Marshall Holds Off Wheeling Park
MOUNDSVILLE — Wheeling Park mounted a comeback attempt with four runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday, but the Monarchs were able to close the door on a home win, 7-5, in high school softball action.
Lily Dijkstra earned the win, pitching the full seven innings and striking out three.
John Marshall leadoff hitter Nora Shock collected four hits including a double, scoring three times and driving in one run. Paislee Babiczuk had two RBI. Aubrey Lilley doubled and had one RBI.
Harmony Bittner was saddled with the loss for Wheeling Park. She struck out three in six innings. Four of John Marshall’s runs were scored as unearned. Wheeling Park committed three errors Monday; the Monarchs committed none.
Ava Harris hit two doubles Monday for Park. Kylah Cunningham also doubled and drove in three runs. Bittner and Brenna Tipton also had multi-hit days.
The victory allowed the Monarchs a regular-season sweep of the Patriots.
Martins Ferry 10, Union Local 0
MARTINS FERRY — Maddie Lucas smashed two home runs as part of a three-hit, four-RBI day and the Purple Riders took down the Jets in six innings Monday at home. Her first hit was the 100th of her career.
Giana Chirpas also homered to tie the career home run mark, finishing with two RBI. Gracie Lucas hit a double, a single, and had two RBI.
Myah Martin, Kylie Stidd and Khloe Gallagher notched hits for Union Local.
River 8, Cameron 6
SARDIS – Mallory Maddy belted a two-run, walk-off homer as the Pilots navigated past the visiting Dragons.
River trailed 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh before winning pitcher Ava Wohnhas slugged a game-tying home run. Alyvia Bayes singled and advanced to second on Cyla Jeffers sacrifice bunt. With two strikes, Maddy went deep to left for the game-winner.
Wohnhas also starred inside the circle with 15 strikeouts. She scattered four hits. Maddy also singled and doubled to finish with four RBI. Emmalynn Pittman had a two-run single.
Skye Dobbs belted a three-run homer for Cameron. Edie Hartley had a single, double and RBI, while Kendra Thomas tripled.
Monroe Central 9, Caldwell 1
CALDWELL – The visiting Seminoles bounced back from a loss Saturday by scoring early and often against the Redskins. They led 7-0 after three and 9-0 after four.
Berylee McFrederick recorded three runs batted in with a single and double. Neveah Burdette slugged a three-run homer and Kenndi Jorris singled and homered.
Kamryn Winland earned the win inside the circle with four innings of hitless relief work. She fanned seven.
Weir 5, Wheeling Central 3
ELM GROVE – The visiting Red Riders scored four times in the top of the first inning and pitcher Eliza Utt made them stand up in their victory over the Maroon Knights on Ben’s Field at the I-470 J.B. Chambers Complex.
Utt struck out five, walked two and scattered six hits.
Lila Boilegh smacked a solo home run for Weir, while Loganne Barton and Zoey Spencer each doubled. Lexi Shockley had a pair of singles.
Berkleigh Heller singled and doubled to lead Wheeling Central. Maddie Meihle doubled twice and Chloe Groome also doubled.
Magnolia 13, Wirt County 2
ELIZABETH – Audri Quinn drove in three runs as the Blue Eagles flew past the host Tigers. Jessa Anderson singled and doubled twice, while Sidney Knight singled twice and doubled, with Knight knocking in two runs and Anderson one.
Olivia Hohman had two singles and a pair of runs batted in.
Shenandoah 16, Shadyside 4
SARASHVILLE – The visiting Tigers scored three times in the top of the first but watched the Zeps tally the next 11 runs in the six-inning affair.
Kari Zeroski doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead Shadyside. Kaylie Warnock had a two-run single and Ali Weatherson and Reese Burkhart had run-producing base hits.
BASEBALL
Indian Creek 10, Beaver Local 2
EAST LIVERPOOL – The Redskins (9-0) remained unbeaten with their win over the host Beavers.
Hunter Rusnak singled twice, doubled and accounted for an RBI, while Sylus Hyde singled twice, homered and knocked in two runs. Luke McVicker had a pair of singles that drove in a run. Garrin Clark singled in a pair.
James Brothers went the distance with eight strikeouts and three walks. He gave up four hits.
Barnesville 15, Cambridge 5
BARNESVILLE – The Shamrocks (8-1) won for the eighth straight start as a 10-run bottom of the fourth sparked their win over the visiting Bobcats at Memorial Park.
Brayden Watters drove in three runs with a single and double to lead Barnesville. Blake Burkhart had a double and four runs batted in, while Aidan Caldwell drove in a pair of runs.
Bobby Thompson and Keegan Martin worked the mound, each chalking up three strikeouts.
Martins Ferry 5, Union Local 2
MARTINS FERRY – The host Purple Riders (6-3) completed their home-and-home sweep of the Jets as Eli Smith’s two-run single sparked a four-run second inning.
Colby Kropka went the first five innings, striking out four. Smith finished with a pair of strikeouts. Both also had doubles.
Braylon Lucas had a pair of singles for Union Local.
Cameron 15, Bridgeport 5
CAMERON – The Dragons (12-3) scored nine runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to pull away from the visiting Bulldogs. Anthony Bellanco’s two-run single highlighted the uprising.
Landon Francis singled three times and doubled to knock in four runs for Cameron. Owen Whisler had an RBI double.
Ike Yoho earned the mound win with three strikeouts in a four-hit complete game.
Bode Brown had a two-run homer for Bridgeport, while Connor Nelson added a solo blast. Xander Wilson had a run-scoring single.
Shadyside 10, Shenandoah 3
SARAHSAVILLE – Trey Wright went the distance on the mound, striking out seven, walking none and spacing out 10 hits for the visiting Tigers. He also singled twice and doubled. Jacob Allen stroked a three-run double, while Nathan Beck singled twice to plate three runs.
University 6, Wheeling Park 5
MORGANTOWN – The host Hawks tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to slip by the snake-bitten Patriots. Wheeling Park also blew a late lead Saturday at Indian Creek.
Jaxon Updegraff singled in two runs for the Patriots, while Miles Gorby had a run-producing base hit and Nolan Yanchak doubled.

CONNORVILLE – Karlie Lander struck out 11 in each game as the Panthers swept the visiting Potters. She allowed two hits in the opener and scattered eight in the second game.
Danika Bauknecht doubled in the first game and had a single and double in the second. Jadyn Pleise singled in a run and Necia Hosenfeld singled twice.
Wheeling Central 6, Madonna 0
ELM GROVE – Olivia Kiaski allowed two singles and singled and homered as the Maroon Knights defeated the Blue Dons on Ben’s Field at the I-470 J.B. Chambers Complex.
Morgan Miehle, Bella Rine and Chloe Groome all singled twice, with Groome adding a double. Seneca Heller also doubled.
BASEBALL
Barnesville 3, Garaway 0
SUGARCREEK – The visiting Shamrocks (7-1) rode the combined four-hit shutout pitching of Blake Burkhart and Parker Sobutka in blanking the Pirates.
Burkhart struck out six in 6-plus innings, while Sobutka fanned a pair.
Jack Anderson singled and doubled for Barnesville, while Keegan Martin had a double.
