High School Roundup: John Marshall, Monroe Central Score Softball Wins

GLEN DALE – John Marshall won for the third straight day this week with a 6-3 doubling up of visiting Brooke Wednesday on Monarch Field. The win completed a regular-season sweep for the Monarchs (19-3) over the Bruins.

John Marshall, No. 1 in the latest W.Va. Coaches Association Class AAA poll, broke a 2-all game wide open with four runs in the bottom of the third.

Kaylee White had two of the Monarchs six singles and she was one of three JM players with an RBI, the other being Masyn Inclan and Aubrey Lilley. Riley Polsinelli keyed the third-inning outburst with a two-run single.

Three John Marshall pitchers combined on a six-hitter, with Ella Finley going the first five to earn the win.

Eden McKinney had a two-run double for the Bruins (10-15), while Jazymn Wood singled in another and Maggie Diserio tripled.

John Marshall has now won seven straight and 12 of its last 13.

Monroe Central 14, Shadyside 3

SHADYSIDE – The visiting Seminoles scored 12 runs in the final three innings to dispatch the Tigers.

Allie McFrederick was a one-player wrecking crew with two doubles, a home run and five runs batted in. She also worked the first four innings inside the circle with six strikeouts, two walks and four hits allowed.

Jadyn Miller drove in three runs, while Kamryn Winland had a pair of ribbies. Karsyn Muncy singled thrice to knock in a trio of teammates.

Ali Weatherson doubled in a run for Shadyside. Kari Zeroski singled twice and picked up an RBI.

Beaver Local 7, Martins Ferry 4

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Purple Riders (18-2) saw their eight-game winning streak halted by the Beavers (15-3) in the Buckeye 8 championship game.

Maddie Lucas singled, doubled and drove in two runs, while Makayla Cole and Ella Mamone had two singles each. Giana Chirpas doubled in the other two runs.

Wheeling Park 5, Oak Glen 3

WHEELING – The Patriots scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before striking for two in the seventh to defeat the visiting Golden Bears.

Brenna Tipton doubled and tripled to drive in a run for Wheeling Park. Grace Tamburin slugged her third home run -a solo shot – in two nights and Alyvia West singled in a run. Kyah Cunningham had a sacrifice fly that produced a run.

London Fankhouser went the distance inside the circle, striking out two, walking one and scattering seven hits.

Nevaeh Heaton belted a two-run homer for Oak Glen and Kylie Robinson had a pair of doubles.

Linsly 7, Weir 6

WHEELING – The Cadets slipped past the visiting Red Riders at the Holloway Field Complex.

Alyssa Heath and Reagan Vansyoc each drove in two runs with a single and double, while Hailey Driscoll singled three times to knock in a run.

Bri Weber, Loganne Barton and Illona Kirlangitis all singled twice, with Heath and Vansyoc each driving in two runs.

Cameron 8, Magnolia 3

NEW MARTINSVILLE — Kendra Thomas powered the Dragons’ offense to a road win Wednesday over the Blue Eagles.

Thomas finished with three hits, including a triple, and four RBI. She also stole two bases, scoring thrice.

Lexi Bogard picked up the win inside the circle, pitching the full seven innings and striking out 11.

Bella Sockman tallied three hits for Magnolia, including a double. Sidney Knight, Gabby Hudson and Audri Quinn also had multi-hit days for the Blue Eagles, who finished with 10 hits to Cameron’s eight. Magnolia committed three errors Wednesday, the Dragons did not make an error.

BASEBALL

Wheeling Park 10, St. Clairsville 0

WHEELING – The Patriots scored in five of the six innings as they rolled past the visiting Red Devils in the completion of a game suspended by rain last week.

Jaxon Updegraff relieved Kolten Whitmire to start the second inning and struck out five in as many innings. He also singled, doubled twice and drove in a run.

Whitmire belted a two-run homer and Braydon Baertsch had a trio of singles and three runs batted in. Bodie Cox and Nolan Yanchak delivered run-scoring singles and Miles Gorby singled twice.

St. Clairsville had five singles by five different players.

Indian Valley 5, Indian Creek 4

GNADENHUTTEN – The Redskins (11-1) tasted defeat for the first time as the host Braves prevailed.

James Brothers belted a solo home run for Indian Creek. Luke McVicker and Sylus Hyde had run-scoring base hits.

John Marshall 4, Warren 1

VINCENT — The heart of the Monarchs’ lineup helped John Marshall to a road win Wednesday against the Warriors.

Cain Martin, Mason Markonich, Jacob Cisar and Kayden Knapp all tallied one RBI for John Marshall– the Monarchs’ two-, three-, four- and five-hole hitters, respectively. Martin, Markonich and Knapp all ripped doubles.

Warren did not get on the board until the bottom of the seventh inning. Cisar earned the win, pitching six innings and striking out three. Jesse McDowell worked the seventh and punched out one.

Wheeling Central 10, Williamstown 0

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Maroon Knights earned a five-inning, run-rule victory Wednesday against the Yellow Jackets at the St. Clairsville Junior Sports Complex.

Brady Ernest pounded two home runs for Central, finishing with three RBI. Zayne Rosnick also homered and had two RBI. Koy Lipinski, Brayden Cover, Clay Petry and Jake Brown all doubled as Wheeling Central had 10 hits as a team.

Brown also earned the win, shutting out Williamstown while striking out five. He allowed two hits and did not issue a walk.
