High School Roundup: Seminoles, Purple Riders Softball Dominant
WOODSFIELD – Monroe Central banged out 16 hits in blowing past visiting Magnolia, 16-0, Thursday in high school softball action. The Seminoles (8-1) have scored 10-plus runs in seven of their victories.
Olivia Earley doubled and homered to account for three RBI, while Kennadi Jorris drove in three with a single and two doubles. Kamryn Winland had a single, a pair of doubles and knocked in two runs. Nevaeh Burdette plated a pair of runs with a single and double. Jadyn Miller and Maclarin Craft each slugged a two-run double and winning pitcher Allie McFrederick delivered a two-run single. Karsyn Muncy chipped in a single and double.
McFrederick worked the first three innings, allowing two hits, striking out five and walking one. Winland pitched the final two frames with a pair of Ks.
Jessa Anderson had a double for the Blue Eagles.
Martins Ferry 11, Bellaire 1
MARTINS FERRY – The Purple Riders (12-1) rolled past the visiting Big Red (4-8) for the second time in less than a week as Ohio University recruit Giana Chirpas banged out four singles and drove in two runs.
The Lucas cousins – Maddie and Gracie – each collected a single and double, with Maddie driving in a trio of runs and Gracie two. The Brandon sisters – Kendyl and Keigan – each singled twice and both drove in a run. Ella Mamone singled twice and Tori Long had a double.
Maddie Lucas shined inside the circle with eight strikeouts and one walk. She scattered four hits.
Addison Kovach and Calleigh Holt each doubled for Bellaire.
Eight of the Purple Riders victories have come by the mercy rule.
Martins Ferry hosts Monroe Central on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Barnesville 4, St. Clairsville 0
Barnesville 11, St. Clairsville 3
BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks pulled off a home sweep Thursday against the visiting Red Devils.
In their first game, a 4-0 Barnesville win, Ella Betts pitched the full seven on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit. She and Abygail Ady each recorded knocks for the ‘Rocks, with Ady finishing with an RBI.
On the other side, St. Clairsville’s Sophia Turner allowed just two hits inside the circle.
St. Clairsville committed four errors, Barnesville three.
In their second game, Barnesville’s offense ignited behind a three-hit day for Betts, who drove in two. Sophie Carpenter doubled and Peyton Loudin tripled for the Shamrocks.
Loudin also earned the win while going the distance inside the circle, striking out five.
Molina Price and Sophia Turner each recorded RBI for the Red Devils.
BASEBALL
Linsly 12, Williamstown 6
WILLIAMSTOWN – The Cadets (7-2-1) doubled up the host Yellowjackets behind a 13-hit attack.
Chris Upton sparked the Linsly hit parade with two singles, a triple and a home run that drove in four runs. Jaxon Murray knocked in three runs with a single and a homer, while Preston Hartley added a solo shot.
Dom Fato singled twice and accounted for a pair of ribbies. Hayden Ward singled twice. Brodi Prout singled home a run and Tucker Doty recorded an RBI.
Vinny Gorrence relieved Kolson Ludolph to start the second inning and went the distance, striking out three and not allowing a walk. They combined on a six-hitter.
Shadyside 6, Steubenville Catholic 1
SHADYSIDE – Trey Wright pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits and striking out three with one walk as the Tigers tamed the visiting Crusaders on Fleming Field. He also singled twice to drive in a run.
Wright needed 96 pitches to get the job done, with 65 being strikes. The lone run he allowed was unearned.
Damian Russell and Jacob Allen each singled in a run while Dominic Forgacs singled and doubled.
Matt Jones, JoJo Corabi and Zach Bryan each singled twice for Steubenville Catholic.
Barnesville 5, Cambridge 0
CAMBRIDGE – Dylan Blon scattered two singles for his program-record 17th mound victory as the Shamrocks (6-1) won for the sixth consecutive game after a season-opening setback to Union Local.
The southpaw struck out seven and walked a pair.
Gunner Dudzik singled and doubled to drive in two runs for Barnesville. Jaxton Swallie singled in two runs and Blake Burkhart singled and doubled.
Bridgeport 9, Frontier 7
BRIDGEPORT — After trailing by as many as five runs, the Bulldogs rallied to best the Cougar on Thursday at Niekro Diamond.
Xander Wilson led things off on the hill for the Bulldogs. The pitcher allowed nine hits and six runs (five earned) over five innings, striking out four and walking one.
Roman Sauvageot led Bridgeport with two runs batted in. The leadoff hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Brode Brown and Gage Drummond each collected two hits for Bulldogs.
John Marshall 12, Berkeley Springs 2
MOUNDSVILLE — The Monarchs finished up their business an inning early Thursday, beating the Indians via run-rule in six innings at home.
Jacob Cisar earned the win on the mound, one of four pitchers John Marshall employed Thursday. The senior struck out five in three innings’ work.
Cain Martin doubled, singled and had two RBI. Mason Markonich had a three-hit, two-RBI day of his own, while Tristan Moore drove in two.
