High School Roundup: Wheeling Central, St. Clairsville Picking Up Steam
SUGAR GROVE — The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights blanked the Berne Union Rockets on Friday 6-0, helped by an all-around effort by junior Brady Ernest.
Ernest started on the mound and went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits and one walk.
Ernet also went 3-3 at the plate with a double and a home run, driving in two.
Kade Koroneos also had a muli-hit day, going 2-3 with two RBI.
Brayden Cover had two RBI for Central as well.
St. Clairsville 15, Bellaire 4
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Red Devils got off to a good start and never looked back in a home win over the Big Reds.
St. C. scored six runs in the first inning to set the tone for their eventual five-inning victory.
Landon Stack pitched the first four Friday, earning the win and striking out five. Kohen Holmes pitched the fifth inning, striking out two.
Tyler Kosek had a big day at the plate, doubling and homering on his way to four RBIs. Matheson King also homered, and had three RBI. Jiko Jacob also finished with three RBI, while Dalton Neff and Rowan Mellott each had two.
Shadyside 13, Bridgeport 2
SHADYSIDE — The Tigers scored seven in the second inning on their way to a victory over the Bulldogs.
Carson Sauvageot led things off on the bump for the Bulldogs. The hurler allowed three hits and eight runs (five earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking six. Ryan Collins started on the hill for Shadyside. The starting pitcher gave up two hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out 11 and walking three.
Gage Drummond and Brett Kuprowicz each collected one hit for Bridgeport. Brett Kuprowicz led the Bulldogs with one run batted in.
Ryan Collins provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Shadyside with three runs batted in. Collins, Dom Forgacs, Jacob Allen, Aaron Pacifico, Trey Wright, and Kolton Harmon each collected one hit for Shadyside Varsity Tigers. Shadyside had patience at the plate, collecting 10 walks for the game.
Indian Creek 10, Beaver Local 0
WINTERSVILLE — Creek scored five in the bottom of the sixth to cut their home game Friday vs. the Beavers a bit short.
Sylus Hyde drove in two for Indian Creek. Quinn Ujcich, Gavin Pownall and Adam Brothers each hit doubles. Garrin Clark hit two doubles. Brothers and Clark each had three-hit days.
Adam Brothers also pitched the shutout on the mound, striking out a pair and allowing four hits and one walk.
Wheeling Park 3, Huntington 2
WHEELING — The Patriots took home a narrow victory over the Highlanders on Friday.
In a low-scoring affair, Jaxson Upedegraff struck out seven on the mound for Wheeling Park, earning the win in a complete-game effort.
Myles Gorby had two base hits and one RBI. Bodie Cox and Tristen Hays also finished with RBI.
Union Local 11, Oak Glen 6
NEW CUMBERLAND — The Jets outpaced the Golden Bears on Friday to pick up a road victory.
Union Local finished with five extra-base hits. Wyatt Ogilbee, Kam Gordon and Brody Gregor each doubled, while Colby Carpenter and Evan Pozviak both hit triples. Bregor and Paziviak each finished with two RBI. Carpenter, Gregor and Gordon each had two-hit days.
Kaden Dragisisch had a good day for Oak Glen, doubling, singling, and finishing with three RBI. Luke Buckler also had a two-hit day with a double and a single.
SOFTBALL
River 9, Frontier 2
HANNIBAL — The Pilots kept their foot on the gas Friday, scoring in all their turns at the plate except one in a home victory over the Cougars.
Ava Wohnhas continued to be a strikeout machine for River, punching out 16 batters across six innings. She issued no walks and allowed four hits.
Alyvia Bayes led the Pilots’ offense with three RBI, tallying three singles and a double. Wohnhas and Cyla Jeffers each homered and drove in two.
River is now 7-3 on the year. Frontier is 5-8.
Cambridge 5, Barnesville 4
CAMBRIDGE — The Shamrocks mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, posting three runs to cut their deficit to one against the Bobcats, but came up one score short of equalizing Friday.
Either team committed five errors Friday.
Emma Swan and Mariah Schafffer each hit doubles for Barnesville. Schaffer also notched an RBI.
Peyton Loudin struck out six inside the circle, pitching the full six innings.
Magnolia 10, Williamstown 5
NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagles racked up 15 hits in a big offensive day vs. the Yellowjackets.
Kaylee Yost had two doubles and four total hits for Magnolia, driving in two. Bella Sockman had two hits and three RBI, while Sophia Alexander had two hits and two RBI. Jessa Anderson doubled and had three hits total.
Aerie Varner once again picked up the win inside the circle for Magnolia, striking out four.

SOFTBALL
Bridgeport 5, Frontier 4
SHADYSIDE — The Cougars tied the game 4-4 in the top of the seventh, but the Bulldogs were able to walk it off in the bottom-half on Thursday for the win.
Hanna Brewer struck out eight pitching a complete game for Bridgeport. She also reached twice and drove in a run at the plate.
Kaylee Baxter doubled and singled for the Dogs, driving in one. Hannah McKinley also had an RBI.
