High School Roundup: Wheeling Park Captures First Win Under Stout In His Second Stint
WHEELING – Chad Stout will remember his first victory in his second go-round as head coach of the Wheeling Park baseball program.
Tuesday afternoon high atop the Friendly City, the Patriots (1-3) struck for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there for a 16-1 triumph over Brooke in four-and-a-half innings on Patriot Field, avenging a 1-0 loss on opening day in Wellsburg.
Miles Gorby drove in four runs with a single, double and pair of triples as Wheeling Park banged out 14 hits against a trio of Bruin hurlers. Kolten Whitmire singled twice and doubled to produce three runs, while Jaxon Updegraff doubled twice to plate three runs.
Tristen Hayes added a two-run double for Wheeling Park, while Bode Cox singled, doubled and knocked in a run. Braydon Bartsch had two singles and two runs batted in.
Whitemire went the distance, fanning four, walking one and giving up five hits – all singles. The lone run was unearned.
Linsly 9, University 8
MORGANTOWN – Jaxon Murray collected four hits in four at bats as the visiting Cadets defeated the Hawks. Murray hit a solo home run to left field in the third inning, tripled in the seventh inning, singled in the fourth inning and singled in the first inning.
Linsly added to its early lead in the top of the second inning as Chris Upton doubled to center field, scoring a run.
The Cadets extended the lead with two runs in the top of the third thanks to home runs by Murray and Preston Hartley.
Tucker Doty earned the win. He gave up five hits and eight runs (six earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking eight.
Linsly amassed nine hits in the game. Upton and Dominic Fato each collected multiple hits.
Caldwell 3, Wheeling Central 2, 8 inn.
CALDWELL – The Redskins pushed a run across in the bottom of the eighth to slip past the Maroon Knights (0-2).
Jake Brown struck out 11, walked one and allowed one hit in five innings of work. Brayden Cover relieved and fanned four.
Zayne Rosnick doubled in a run for Wheeling Central. Koy Lipinski had a sacrifice fly to account for the other tally.
Martins Ferry 12, Bellaire 1
MARTINS FERRY – Eli Smith drove in three runs with a single and two-run homer as the Purple Riders (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening loss. Christian Shutler singled twice and doubled, while Hunter Shutler singled twice and Colby Kropka added a two-run single.
Matt Cost went the distance on the hill, striking out five, walking one and giving up four hits.
Brae Schmidli doubled in the Big Reds lone run in the top of the fifth.
Barnesville 6, St. Clairsville 4
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The visiting Shamrocks put a damper on the Red Devils first game on the new turf surface at Memorial Park.
Barnesville broke a 4-all deadlock with two runs in the top of the sixth inning and relievers Keegan Martin and Dylan Blon made them stand up.
Aidan Caldwell, Braylon Lucas and Jack Anderson all had two hits for Barnesville, with Caldwell driving in two runs. Blake Burkhart added an RBI single.
Matheson King tripled in two runs for St. Clairsville. Caiden Bailey had three hits. Dalton Neff and Roby Hanna added run-producing base hits.
Shadyside 10, Steubenville Catholic 4
STEUBENVILLE – The visiting Tigers (2-1) scored three times in the first and added four more in the fifth to top the Crusaders at Vaccaro Field.
Freshman Nathan Beck tossed a complete-game three-hitter, striking out six and walking one. Jacob Allen (2 singles), Ryan Collins (single, double, RBI) and Dom Forgacs (2 singles, RBI) collected six of Shadyside’s eight hits. Kelsyn West had a pair of ribbies.
SOFTBALL
Monroe Central 13, Magnolia 2
NEW MARTINSVILLE – Brylee McFrederick came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as the Seminoles ran away from the host Blue Eagles. She finished with four RBI.
Kennadi Jorris had a double and three runs batted in, while Maclaurin Craft singled twice to produce a run and Allie McFrederick added a two-run single.
Allie McFrederick and Kamryn Winland combined on a one-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Sindey Knight had a two-run double for Magnolia.
Harrison Central 5, Union Local 1
MORRISTOWN – Mikayla Pelegreen struck out seven, walked four and permitted two hits in pitching the Huskies to a road win against the Jets.
Denali Stull singled twice and drove in a run while Bailey Smith singled twice. Kata Blackburn, Madelyn Johnson and Emma Jarvis all drove in a run.
Kylie Stidd tripled in the lone Union Local run.

Barnesville 3, Union Local 2
BARNESVILLE – Parker Sobutka doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as the Shamrocks avenged a season-opening loss to the Jets. He also had a single and picked up the mound win in relief.
Colby Carpenter and Cam Gordon had RBI hits for Union Local.
Cameron 4, Clay-Battelle 1
CAMERON – The Dragons scored single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings in defeating the visiting Cee-Bees.
Zayde Long struck out 10 in six innings. He also singled, doubled and drove in a run. Hunter Evans singled twice and Skyler Cooey doubled in a run.
Indian Creek 13, Buckeye Local 2
CONNORVILLE – James Brothers had a three-run double as the Redskins rolled past the host Panthers.
Logan Wedlake and Max Lane each singled twice to knock in two runs, while Luke McVicker had a two-run single.
Sylus Hyde picked up the mound win with seven strikeouts in four innings. He walked one and scattered three hits. Adam Brothers earned the three-inning save with five punchouts.
Tyler Consolidated 13, Valley 3
KIDWELL – The Silver Knights scored four times in the bottom of the first and that’s all they would need in routing the visiting Lumberjacks.
Grady Shortridge knocked in five runs with two singles and a triple, while Landon Boggs drove in three with a pair of doubles. Sawyer Kunkle recorded a pair of runs batted in.
Ashton Morris (6) and Brayden Neff (4) teamed for 10 strikeouts and gave up two hits.
