Maroon Knights Finding Right Track After Dominant Win

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Orel Hershiser said that baseball is a game of adjustments. The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights concurred Tuesday, showing that they have shaken off a couple of early-season losses with back-to-back victories, including Tuesday’s 15-1 thumping of Fort Frye on the diamond at the St. Clairsville Junior Sports Complex.

Specifically, the Maroon’s bats have found answers at the plate.

“It’s kind of been the book on us to throw a lot of off-speed,” Wheeling Central head coach Todd Cover said. “So, we’ve seen that the past couple days, and I think we’re getting used to it now and learning how to stay back and adjust. We had a huge win at Toronto last night and beat another quality opponent tonight, this is a big week for us. We have these two games and then we have Weirton tomorrow, which is a regional game, a very important one, and then we go to Columbus this weekend. It’s a big week for us and hopefully, you know, we can keep this momentum going and keep the week going in a positive direction.”

Wheeling Central scored in each of their four turns at-bat, leading 5-0 after the first inning, and 9-0 after two. Fort Frye got on the board in the top of the fifth, but couldn’t score enough to fend off the run-rule.

The Maroon Knight’s change of approach at the plate yielded 14 hits. Central did not have a batter strike out Tuesday.

Leadoff hitter Jake Brown and five-hole Kade Koroneos each had three RBI for Wheeling Central, with Brown homering and doubling as part of a 4-4 day at the plate. Koroneos also doubled and collected three hits.

Koy Lipinski doubled, singled and drove in one. Brady Ernest doubled, singled and drove in two. Brayden Cover drove in two runs while also pitching the full game for the Knights.

Cover was excellent, striking out 11 and allowing one run on three hits and four walks. The Akron commit threw 94 pitches.

“We kind of expected that,” Todd Cover said of his pitchers’ outing. “I liked that out of him. You know, I think we have not only one ace, but we have three or four aces we can throw out there and be comfortable with, and he’s certainly one of those guys. He was on today. His velo seemed to be up a little bit. He’s ripping the slider some, so he kept them off-balance. He did a really good job.

“That’s kind of what we expect from him. I know there’s a lot of pressure on him just because of who he is, he’s already committed to college, so there’s a lot of pressure, but he threw really well today.”

Now 3-2 on the season, the Maroon Knights see themselves on the right track heading into their game Wednesday evening at Weir.

“The thing about baseball is you have to do it every day to stay in it,” Cover said. “It’s hard to take a day off in-between or two days off in-between, and the weather hasn’t been so great. It’s been positive just being able to play the last two days, and I think the forecast looks pretty good for this weekend. So just getting the games in hopefully gets us in a rhythm. We can continue to improve and get a little bit better.”
