Shadyside Relays Preparations Ongoing For Saturday Tradition

SHADYSIDE — Spring has officially arrived, signaling the start of the HS track and field season. With this in mind, preparations for the 55th Shadyside Relays began in February and continues today. The Shadyside Relays will be held on Saturday, April 18, the traditional third Saturday of April.

Jayson Johnson will again serve as the Chairman/President.

“We are privileged to again offer a high quality track and field meet to feature the many student-athletes from our surrounding area and beyond,” Johnson said. “I also want to emphasize the great support we receive from the committee, officials, school and especially the community who provide us with the financial resources to hold such a quality event.”

Though she has stepped aside as a coach, Jenna Coyne continues to serve as Meet Director, demonstrating her dedication to the student-athlete and the sport.

“I am happy to continue being the Meet Director as it benefits our student-athletes, the community and the sport of track and field.” Coyne said, “As of April 1, we have 18 schools with a boys and girls team registered to compete.” “We expect a few more to join us.”

The following schools have registered to compete: Bellaire, Bridgeport, Buckeye Local, Caldwell, Claymont, East Richland, Edison, Garaway, Linsly, Martins Ferry, Monroe Central, River, Shadyside, Steubenville, Steubenville Catholic, Weirton Madonna, Weirton, Wheeling Central.

The Shadyside Relays will begin with Field Events at 9 a.m. Running trials and some finals will be held at 10. The opening ceremony and finals at about 12:30 p.m. There will be a social the preceding evening for coaches, officials, school personnel and sponsors at the Shadyside American Legion beginning at 6. The general public is welcome at a cost of $10 per person.
