High School Roundup: Madonna, Edison Grab Postseason Wins
NEW MANCHESTER — The Madonna baseball team lives to fight another day.
The Blue Dons overcame a slow start Wednesday evening and stormed away from Clarksburg Notre Dame with a big inning late, staying alive with a 10-5 victory in a Class A Region 1 tournament elimination game.
After falling behind 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3, Madonna exploded with seven runs in the sixth.
With the victory, Madonna stays alive and earned another shot at top seed Cameron today. The Dons will need to beat the Dragons twice to advance to the state tournament. Madonna dropped a close 6-5 battle with Cameron earlier in the double elimination tournament.
Lazear finished with three hits, including a triple and double, and five RBIs.
Connor Lancaster fired the first five innings for the Dons, striking out seven. Kaczmarek got the win in relief, firing 1 1/3 innings and Reno Fuscardo fired the final 2/3 of an inning to close things out.
After multiple days of rain outs in the tournament, the game was played at Oak Glen on the turf.
OHSAA Division IV Eastern District Semifinals
Edison 6, Philo 5
RICHMOND – Playing close games has become the norm for the Edison baseball team, and Edison displayed its never say die attitude against Philo with a trip to the district final on the line.
The sixth-seeded Electrics scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a three-run lead only to see the third-seeded Wildcats answer with three runs of its own in the home half of the inning to send the game to the 10th. Ultimately, the Wildcats plated the winning run thanks to a hit batter and three walks in the 11th as Brady Haught drew a bases-loaded walk scoring JD Henderson, who led off the inning by being issued a free pass, as the Wildcats took down the Electrics, 6-5, in a marathon Ohio Division IV Eastern District Semifinal Wednesday evening out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
With the win, Edison will play No. 1 seed Indian Valley in the district final at 5 p.m. Friday at a site to be announced. Indian Valley advanced to the final by defeating No. 10 seed John Glenn, 7-4, in the semifinals Wednesday at home.
TRACK AND FIELD
OHSAA Div. IV Region 12 Meet
YOUNGSTOWN — Looking to punch their tickets to the upcoming OHSAA Jesse Owens Track and Field State Championships, track athletes from around the area took to Austintown-Fitch High School for this year’s regional meet, taking place Wednesday and Friday. After the first day of action, several standouts have punched their tickets to the state meet.
From Union Local, Jaime Bolon qualified for the girls high jump, clearing 5-03. Jameson Bable qualified for the boys discus, recording a 155-03 heave. Connor Bendo ran into a qualifying position in the boys 3200-meter run, clocking a 9:18.10 to finish second in the region.
Out of Martins Ferry, the girls 4×800-meter relay quartet of Ireland Jennette, Akaila Williams, Lakyn Call and Alanna Williams qualified with a 9:56.54.
Much of Wednesday’s running events were preliminaries, with the finals to be held Friday.

BASEBALL
Ridgewood 5, St. Clairsville 2
WEST LAFAYETTE – Third-seeded Ridgewood (20-9) broke a 2-all deadlock with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday night in defeating No. 7 St. Clairsville 5-2 in an Ohio Division V, East District 2 semifinal baseball tournament semifinal.
Jaxon Starks had a run-scoring triple for the Red Devils (14-14). Matheson King drove in the other tally with a sacrifice fly. Niko Jacob had a double.
Hudson Florence took the loss. The southpaw pitched into the sixth, giving up half-a-dozen hits and striking out six. He issued three walks.
The Generals will face second-seeded Harrison Central on Thursday at Tuscarawas Valley High School in Zoar. The Huskies defeated No. 9 West Muskingum, 9-5. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
