High School Roundup: River’s Wohnhas Slams Pilots Past Toronto, 13-3

SARDIS – River used a grand slam from senior Ava Wohnhas to jump-start the third-seeded Pilots (20-7) to a 13-3 rout of visiting No. 7 Toronto in an Ohio Division VI, East 2 sectional tournament game that last four-and-a-half innings.

Wohnhas, who struck out five, didn’t walk a batter and scattered six hits, highlighted a 9-run outburst in the second inning with one sewing of the bat. It was her single-season school record 16th of the year.

Cyla Jeffers drove in three runs with two singles, while Jayda Kinny-Blair produced a pair of runs with a single and double. Bri Wiley had a two-run single and Mallorie Maddy doubled in two more.

The Red Knights (12-14) received an RBI double from Lily Sapp. Jaylee Brown and Hailey Bodnar each doubled.

River advances to meet top-seeded Caldwell on May 19 in Caldwell.

BASEBALL

Wheeling Park 7, Edison 5

WHEELING – The Patriots scored all of their runs in the bottom of the second inning and then held off the visiting Wildcats.

Jaxon Updegraff sparked Wheeling Park’s 12-hit attack with three singles and a double that plated two runs. Nolan Yanchak singled and doubled, while Rylan Moore drove in a run with two singles. Braydon Bartsch added a run-scoring triple. Miles Gorby doubled in a run and Ossie Hudson singled in another.

Kolten Whitmire went the distance on the mound. The senior struck out nine, walked a pair and surrendered nine hits.

J.D. Henderson belted a two-run triple for Edison.

Martins Ferry 7, Weir 6

WEIRTON – The Purple Riders received a double, home run and three RBI from junior Eli Smith in their narrow victory over the host Red Riders.

Colby Kropka delivered three singles that produced a run, while Santino DeArdo doubled in a pair.

Martins Ferry visits Oak Glen on Tuesday.

River 7, Bridgeport 2

BROOKSIDE – Ty Nething went six innings, scattering six hits, striking out eight, walking one and allowing a pair of unearned runs as the visiting Pilots navigated past the Bulldogs on Niekro Diamond.

Wyatt Stalder singled twice and knocked in three runs for River.

Bridgeport’s Brett Kurpowicz had two singles and an RBI. Conner Nelson singled thrice.
