ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Wheeling Central Maroon Knights continued their stretch of dominant play on the diamond Monday, dealing Weir a 11-0 defeat on the field at St. Clairsville Memorial Park and capturing the WVSSAC Class AA Region 1 championship to advance to the W.Va. state tournament in two week’s time.

Central senior Brayden Cover spinned a one-hitter across the abbreviated, five-inning game, striking out nine in earning the win.

Weir’s lone hit was a double off the bat of Nick DiMatteis.

Koy Lipinski, the captain of last year’s Class AA All-State First Team, came through in a big way for the Maroon on Monday, hitting a double and a home run to total five RBI for Central.

Jake Brown singled and doubled, scoring twice and driving in a run. Zayne Rosnick and Brady Ernest doubled.

Kade Koroneos drove in three runs for the Knights.

Wheeling Central is 27-4 on the season, having won 21 straight games. Weir finishes their season with a 17-18 mark.

MARTINSBURG — The Bulldogs got the better of the Patriots in a pitcher’s duel Monday, Wheeling Park being eliminated from the WVSSAC playoffs with the loss.

Wheeling Park got on the board in the sixth inning after an RBI double by Jaxson Updegraff. Brody Groome and Rylan Moore also notched hits for Park as Martinsburg’s Grant Henderson struck out 10 and limited the Patriots to three hits.
