WINTERSVILLE — A day after getting shut down in the OVAC championship, the Weir High softball team’s heated back up.

The Red Riders bounced back with a 14-7 victory on the road at Indian Creek for a season sweep of the Redskins, and pounded out 14 hits in the process a day after being held to just one.

“After 16 strikeouts (Thursday) it was really good to see us put the bat on the ball and score some runs,” Weir head coach John Leary said. “I think mentally, confidence wise, that was good for us.”

Bella Weber started in the circle and went the distance for the Red Riders (19-9), her first outing of the season that went more than three innings. She struck out three and walked two and just two of the runs against her were earned.

“That is the longest stretch Bella has pitched all year,” Leary said. “She probably got a little tired in the fifth-sixth inning, she threw a lot more pitches than she’s used to throwing. She was able to give Eliza (Utt) a break today and she did a good job.”

The Red Riders opened things up in the top of the second with five runs after a scoreless first. They led 9-2 after three and half innings, but Indian Creek (6-18), playing on its senior day, did not go away quietly.

“Give Indian Creek credit, they kept battling and hanging around,” Leary said. “Give them a lot of credit, when you get down that big and keep battling that’s a credit to their kids.”

Creek rallied with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 9-6 before Weir High scored five of the last six runs to hold off the Redskins comeback bid.

“We kept fighting,” Indian Creek head coach Amber Scott said. “We’re young, we have a tough schedule, but these girls keep battling. They have grit and resilience. We just have to eliminate that one bad inning we seem to have. Weir is a good team, they hit the ball well. We could have quit, but we didn’t.

“We got some key hits, some mistakes hurt us, but we’re going to learn from it. I’m happy that we fought to the end.”

Utt, who got the day off from pitching after being hit with a comeback a day earlier, stayed in the line up with her bat and blasted a solo homer, also hitting a double and single to finish a triple shy of the cycle and tallied two RBIs.

Lila Boilegh had a double, single and four RBIs, Lexi Shockley tallied two hits and three RBIs, Chelsea Devore recorded a pair of singles, a double and two RBIs and Iliona Kirlangitis tallied two hits.

For Creek, Peyton Rath had two hits and an RBI, Kylie Dray drove in two runs, Bella Bezak had two hits and an RBI and Aziaih Ade and Maggie Blackburn each drove in a run.

SENIOR DAY

Creek’s four seniors — Ade, Aaliyah Duke, Olivia Hollenbeck and Riley Sadler — took a lap around the bases after the game as Friday was their final home game for the Redskins.

“It’s good and it’s sad,” Scott said of senior day. “I’ve seen them from the start when I was a JV/varsity assistant, I had some of them in middle school volleyball. The growth they’ve shown from the beginning to the end, they kept positive things didn’t go their way. They have taken charge as seniors and been leaders.”
