Continental Football League Announces Ironmen Will Cease Operations
WHEELING — After having their inaugural season canceled at the midway point last summer, the Ohio Valley Ironmen are ceasing operations after playing just one game in their start-up second season.
The Continental Football League, home of the Ironmen, announced through social media Friday that the Ironmen ‘will cease operations effective immediately.’
“The decision follows the inability of a major team sponsor to fulfill its financial commitment to the club,” the league claimed in its post. “League and team leadership exhausted every reasonable avenue to preserve the franchise in its current form, and despite a determined effort, those options ultimately came up short.”
The Ohio Valley Ironmen had kicked off their season with a 35-7 road victory on June 13 over the Cincinnati Dukes, and were set to play Cincinnati again on Sunday, June 28 in what would have been their home debut inside Martins Ferry’s Dave Bruney Football Complex.
The Ohio Valley Ironmen’s website, www.ohiovalleyironmen.com, appears to have been shut down, as have the team’s Facebook and Instagram pages. The Ironmen no longer appear on the CoFL’s list of active teams.
The Ironmen launched last summer, a season where the team played three games, going 3-0 and outscoring their opponents 166-0 across those three games, before cancelling their remaining 2025 schedule, citing other teams’ unwillingness to face them as the reason for an early conclusion to the organization’s first season in town.
Friday’s news comes almost one year to the day of last year’s cancellation, which was announced on June 26 of last year.
