Final Trio Announced For Martins Ferry Athletic Hall Of Fame’s Class Of 2026

The Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 is complete.
The final three selections are all from the MFHS Class of 2002 – Katrina Jones and twin brothers David Tierney and John Tierney.
Previously announced selections for the Martins Ferry Athletic Hall of Fame – Presented by Unified Bank – were Harry Johns (Class of 1941), Walter Veloski (Class of 1941), Frank Twardoski (Class of 1973), Melissa Zaney (Class of 1986), Dave Frey (Class of 1993) and Ron Hill (Class of 2000).
These individuals will be inducted on Friday, August 28th at a luncheon for families at the MHFS cafeteria in the afternoon and they’ll be introduced at halftime of the Purple Riders’ home football game that evening against Columbus Mifflin.
Next week, the two selections for the Wall of Honor will be announced, followed in two weeks by this year’s Teams of Distinction.
Here’s a look at the bios of the final 2026 Hall of Fame selections:
Katrina Jones
(Class of 2002)
This talented athlete could definitely “go the distance” when it came to running, both in track and cross country. In fact, she held the school record in the 1600-meter run for more than two decades with a clocking of 5:11.50.
A three-year letterwinner in track, Jones helped the Lady Riders to the OVAC Class 3A championship as a sophomore when she was part of the second-place 4×800-meter relay (10:17.14) and finished sixth in the 800 meters (2:34.77). The 4×800 quartet also finished third in the 4×800 relay (10:45.1) that year.
As a junior, Jones literally took off, culminating with All-Ohio status after finishing in eighth place in the 1600 meters (5:22.75) at the OHSAA Division II State Track Championships. To get there, she placed second in the Division II District (5:21.66) and third in the Regional (5:15.46). She also reached the D-II State Meet in the 4×800 relay, placing 15th (10:38.35) along with teammates Mandy Bruney, Amy Bruney and Jessica Hale). That foursome was second in the District (10:09.57) and third in the Regional (9:53.52).
Jones added to her junior accomplishments by placing fourth in the 800 at the District (2:27.35) and eighth at the Regional (2:28.0). She was first in the 800 (2:26.64), fourth in the 400 (1:06.67) and 2nd in the 4×800 relay (10:17.14) at the OVAC Class 3A Championships while taking first in the 4×800 relay (10:30.4) and fourth in the 1600 (5:43.4) at the Belmont County Relays.
As a senior, she continued to excel in the 1600, finishing second in the District (5:23.5) and Regional (5:10.66) and placing 15th in the OHSAA Division II State Track Championships (5:30.48).
She scored an OVAC ‘double’ by winning the 1600 (5:12.70) and 3200 (11:36.5) while placing third in the 800 (2:30.20) and also had a ‘double’ in the Belmont County Relays by prevailing in the 1600 (5:26.0) and 3200 (11:52.7) and placing third in the 4×800 relay (10:39.60). Additionally, she posted a ‘triple’ at the Union Local Invitational (800, 1600, 3200); placed first in the 800 and 1600 at the Bellaire Burger King Invitational; first in the 1600 and second in the 800 at the Bellaire EarlyBird and Bellaire Girls Invitational; and first in the 1600 and 3200 (both meet records at the time) and third in the 800 at the Shadyside Relays.
She was an All-Eastern District Division II selection in the 1600 and 3200.
Also a three-year letterwinner in cross country, Jones’ sophomore year included a fifth place finish (19:41) in helping the Lady Riders to the Division II District championship; a 17th place finish in the Regional (Ferry finished third and qualified for the state meet); and a 60th place effort (20:35) at the OHSAA Division II State Cross Country Championships (the Riders were 11th as a team). She also placed third in Class 3A and fourth overall in the OVAC Cross Country Championships (Ferry was the Overall and Class 3A team champion); and was third in the Belmont County Meet (21:21) and Ohio Valley Cross Country League Meet (20:05).
Her junior year in the postseason included a third place finish (20:35) at the District (Ferry won the team title); 18th in the Regional (20:38) and 58th in the OHSAA Division II State Meet (20:10), with the Lady Riders placing 11th as a team. She was the Overall and Class 3A runner-up in the OVAC Championships (20:29), helping the Riders to the team title, and second in the Belmont County Meet (21:16) and OVCCL Meet (19:45). Jones also finished second in invitationals at Meadowbrook and Buckeye Local, third at Newcomerstown and fifth at Cambridge.
As a senior, Jones was sixth in the Division III District (20:07), 10th in the Regional (20:38) and 76th in the OHSAA State Meet (20:46). She also placed third in Class 3A and eighth overall (20:44) in the OVAC Championships; second in the Belmont County Meet (21:12) and 12th in the OVCCL Meet (21:25) while also winning invitationals at Meadowbrook, Buckeye Local and Newcomerstown.
She received All-Eastern District Division II recognition as a junior and senior.
Also an Academic All-Ohioan, Jones received a scholarship to Akron University where she participated in track and cross country for two years.
David Tierney
(Class of 2002)
A four-year letterman in wrestling, this half of the Tierney Twins played a key role for the Purple Riders on the mat each year and finished his career with 149 victories, which was second all-time at MFHS at the time he graduated.
As a freshman, he was the Division III Sectional and District champion and an OHSAA Division III State Tournament qualifier while earning a fifth-place finish at 119 pounds in the prestigious OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Championships.
He followed that up with a terrific sophomore season, posting a sparkling 42-2 record and repeating as Division III Sectional and District champion while placing third in the OHSAA Division III State Tournament to earn All-Ohio status. He also took the runner-up spot in the OVAC Tournament at 119.
As a junior, he moved up to the 125-pound weight class and again won Division III Sectional and District crowns and earned another third-place finish at the OHSAA Division III State Tournament to repeat as an All-Ohioan. This time, he was third in the OVAC Tournament.
Tierney capped his career with a 40-4 senior season as a 130-pounder, again winning Division III Sectional and District titles and qualifying for the OHSAA Division III State Tournament for a fourth consecutive year. He reached the pinnacle at the OVAC Tournament, winning the conference championship.
He represented MFHS in what was called the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic (OVAC vs. WPIAL) match following his final season and was selected as member of the 2000 USA Wrestling-Ohio National Team.
He was inducted into the Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2019.
John Tierney
(Class of 2002)
Not only could this Tierney Twin pin you on the mat, he could also outrun you.
A four-year letterman, John Tierney finished his career with an impressive 147-20 record which was third all-time at MFHS at the time he graduated and was a four-time OHSAA State Tournament qualifier, earning All-Ohio honors twice. He provided a one-two wrestling punch with his twin brother David and joined him as a Martins Ferry Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee in 2019.
As a freshman, he was Division III Sectional and District champion and placed fourth in the OHSAA State Tournament at 103 pounds. He was also the runner-up in the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling Tournament.
Tierney then was the Division III Sectional runner-up and fourth in the District as a sophomore at 119 pounds, again qualifying for the state event and he again finished second in the OVAC Tournament.
As a junior, he captured Division III Sectional and District titles and again gained All-Ohio status by finishing fourth in the OHSAA State Tournament at 119. This time, he was third in the OVAC Tournament.
Tierney’s senior year on the mat resulted in another Division III Sectional/District championship sweep, but he elevated to the runner-up spot in the OHSAA State Tournament at 119 to cap a 40-5 record season He was the OVAC Tournament champion and was later named the OVAC Ohio-side Wrestler of the Year. He competed in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic (OVAC vs. WPIAL).
John Tierney also enjoyed success in cross country as a four-year letterman, competing in the OHSAA State Cross Country Championships and placing high in OVAC Cross Country Championships every year.
As a freshman, he was sixth in the Division II District (17:03) and 10th in the Regional (17:06) while finishing 84th in the State Meet (17:11). He was second in the OVAC Class 3A event (17:30), second in the Ohio Valley Cross Country League (17:13) while also taking third in the Meadowbrook Invitational, fourth in the Cambridge Invitational and fourth in the Zanesville Invitational.
As a sophomore, Tierney placed seventh in the Division III District (16:57) and 10th in the Regional (17:22) to earn a return trip to the OHSAA State Meet. He was second in the OVAC Class 3A Meet/13th overall (17:32), fourth in the OVCCL (17:08) while taking sixth in the Dover Invitational and Meadowbrook Invitational and eighth in the Cambridge Invitational.
As a junior, he was fifth in the Division III District (17:09) and 15th in the Regional (17:30) before placing 54th in the OHSAA State Meet (16:52). He was fifth in the OVAC Class 3A/9th overall (17:59), second in the Buckeye Local Invitational, third in the Newcomerstown Invitational, fifth in the Cambridge Invitational and sixth in the Meadowbrook Invitational and OVCCL Meet.
As a senior, he placed seventh in the Division III District (16:58), ninth in the Regional (17:18) and had his best finish at the OHSAA State Meet by placing 26th (16:41). He was sixth in OVAC Class 3A/12th overall (17:15), second in the OVCCL (16:34), second in the Buckeye Local Invitational and Zanesville Invitational, and third in the Meadowbrook Invitational.
Tierney also competed in track as a freshman, finishing 4th in 3200 in Class 3A at the OVAC Cal Giffin Track Championships (10:32) and fifth in the 3200 at the Belmont County Relays (10:46).
