WHEELING -- Wrapping up a three-game homestand Thursday, the Wheeling Park Patriots boys soccer team maintained their unbeaten start to their season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Marietta (1-1-2).
The Patriots (3-0-1) struck first against the Tigers, with Isaac Welling putting through a goal off of an Aiden McCroskey assist within the first 10 minutes of play at Wheeling Island Stadium.
Marietta, though, tied the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
The tiebreaker came in the second half. After a penalty inside the box, the Patriots earned a penalty kick, and Graham Loy delivered to put his team back in front for good.
Wheeling Park hits the road for their next game, a Saturday affair against Spring Mills (1-2).
St. Clairsville 11, John Marshall 1
MOUNDSVILLE -- The Red Devils (4-1) stormed past the Monarchs (2-2) on Thursday, scoring two goals in the first two minutes and ending the match early with their final goal near the eight-minute mark of the second half triggering a mercy rule.
James Parsons racked up five goals to lead St. C., while Lucas Causey had two goals and a team-high four assists.
Jamison Young, Caden Blacker, Camden Judge and Trevor Tuttle all also scored for the Red Devils.
Brooke 0, Steubenville Catholic 0
STEUBENVILLE -- The Bruins and Crusaders played to a scoreless tie Thursday.
Brooke goalkeeper Bronson Pack finished with a dozen saves.

Wheeling Central 10, Brooke 0
WELLSBURG — The Maroon Knights’ busy week continued with a decisive victory against the Bruins.
Central (3-0) received hat tricks from both sophomore Elah Konkle and junior Elizabeth Steele. Loni Kusic and Maddie Steele evenly divided the remaining four goals.
All told, Kusic was in on seven of the goals because she assisted on five others. Elizabeth Steele had three assists, while Maddie Steele and Kendall Payton also had a helper.
In net, Knights’ keepers — Bella Fitzsimmons and Sophia Benson — combined for five saves.
Central, which is in the midst of a three games in three days stretch, will take part today in an event at South Park High School near Pittsburgh, taking on the host squad at 2 p.m.
GOLF
Weir Tops Four-Team Field
RAYLAND -- The Weir Red Riders improved to 9-2 as a unit with a fine outing at Bec-Wood Hills, finishing ahead of Buckeye Local, Oak Glen and Toronto.
Weir compiled a team score of 164, led by Guy Meneely's 37, good enough to earn match medalist honors. Jonny Horstman carded a 41, while Aiden Ferguson and Jacob Sharrow both shot 43's.
Buckeye Local topped out at 176 as a team, just one stroke behind Oak Glen's 177. The Panthers' top performer was Dugan Dobrovich while the Golden Bears' best outing came from Zach Jenkins. Both shot a 39.
Toronto shot 193 as a team. Hank Bodnar and Joey Westlake each carded a 46 for the Red Knights.
VOLLEYBALL
River def. Shenandoah 25-19, 27-25, 25-15
HANNIBAL -- River came home for the first time this season and did not disappoint, improving to 3-0 with a sweep against the Zeps.
Mallarie Maddy had 20 kills for River while Hallie Hammel had 15. Maddy had a like number of digs. Hammel had 19 digs.
Aubrey Fetty led the Pilots' defensive efforts with 31 digs. She also tallied three aces. Hammel had four aces.
Gracen Reed racked up 36 assists feeding the Pilots' attack.
Martins Ferry def. Union Local 25-9, 25-12, 25-20
BELMONT — The Purple Riders moved to 3-0 on the year with a sweep against the homestanding Jets.
Giana Chirpas (16 kills, five blocks, six digs) and Nicole Hammerquist (10 kills) led Ferry’s offense, set up by Olivia Harkness, who finished the night with an even 30 assists.
SJ Koller kept the ball off the floor with 20 digs. Maddie Lucas had eight digs of her own as well as four kills.
