High School Roundup: River, Purple Riders, Red Devils Volleyball All Start Season With Wins

BARNESVILLE - Visiting River debuted with a four-set win over Barnesville Saturday in high school volleyball action. The Pilots prevailed by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-20.

Mallarie Maddie charted 24 kills, recorded 26 digs and added 13 serves, while Hallie Hammel added 15 kills, 32 digs, 13 serves and three blocks. Aubrey Fetty ended up with 21 digs and 15 serves.

Martins Ferry def. Steubenville 25-8, 25-9, 25-16

STEUBENVILLE -- The Purple Riders started their season strong on Saturday, marching into enemy territory and turning away the Big Red in straight sets.

Giana Chirpas led the attack for Martins Ferry with 11 kills, also registering two aces and three blocks.

Maddie Lucas had six kills and two aces of her own, along with eight digs. Nicole Hammerquist and London Hodor also each finished with six kills.

SJ Koller led the visitors with 16 digs.

Olivia Harkness lined up Ferry's offense and finished with 31 assists. The junior also collected six aces.

Martins Ferry is scheduled to play Belmont County rival St. Clairsville Monday at home.

Big Red is slated to play Jefferson County rival Indian Creek Tuesday night at home.

St. Clairsville def. Shadyside 25-7, 25-14, 25-17

ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The Red Devils defended their home court Saturday against the visiting Tigers.

Addasyn Melanko led the way for Shadyside with eight kills. Lily Donaldson followed with five.

Ella Weeks finished her day as the Tigers' setter with 18 assists. Brooklyn Joseph was a top player for Shadyside's defensive efforts with 11 digs. Ava Mercer had eight digs, and Camryn Long had two blocks.

Wheeling Central 1, Williamstown 0

WILLIAMSTOWN - JD Schoolcraft scored off of an assist by Maddox Ochap as the Maroon Knights moved to 2-0.

Santino Sperlazza with the shutout in net.

Wheeling Central returns to the pitch Wednesday against visiting Weir.

Brooke 6, Edison 0

WELLSBURG - The Bruins (1-1) received two goals each from Jacob High and Jaxon Johnson, with Johnson also adding an assist in their blanking of the Wildcats.

Giacomo Dell'omo had a goal and assist, while Cooper Wiley scored the other goal. Jacob Johnson and Kai Bowers each netted an assist. Goalkeeper Bronson Pack made six saves.

Ronin Hartman had 12 saves for Edison.

Brooke visits St. Clairsville on Tuesday.

Wheeling Park 5, Jefferson 1

WHEELING - Tristin Gonzalez had three goals as the Patriots found the net four times in the first half in their win over the Cougars inside Wheeling Island Stadium.

Aiden McCroskey and Noah Lloyd also recorded goals for Wheeling Park. Miles Rockey, Jake Smith, Graham Loy and Isaac Welling all had assists.

Jacob Robinson made four saves.

Barnesville 34, John Glenn 19

NEW CONCORD - Trey Toliver ran for 188 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries as the Shamrocks took down the host Muskies.

Evan Wells carried the ball eight times for 60 yards and another touchdown, while passing for 17 yards on four completions. Colt Carpenter passed for 116 yards on 8-of-13. Phoenix Graham had four catches for 37 yards. Evan Carpenter caught three balls for 51.

Martins Ferry 42, Mt. Gilead 19

MT. GILEAD - Walkquem Cox rushed for 128 yards and scored four touchdowns in the Purple Riders rout of the host Indians. His TD runs came from 6, 12, 67 and 1 yards. He also had a two-point run.

Colby Kropka completed 8-of-11 passes for 184 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He found Christian Shutler on a 14-yard strike and also teamed with Elijah Roby on a 15-yarder.

Jacob Theaker booted four PATs and R.J. Welshans compiled 10 tackles, two for lost yardage, and a quarterback sack.

Union Local 34, Warren 0

VINCENT -- Hitting the road was no problem for the Jets on Friday as Union Local exhibited two-way dominance to start their season 1-0.

The Jets led 21-0 at halftime and had done all their scoring by the end of the third quarter.

Brody Perzanowski started his senior season in-stride with 130 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns. Kolten Snyder also scored twice on the ground, finishing with 32 tallies.

Evan Poziviak availed himself well in his starting debut for Union Local, completing 10 of 16 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, nabbed by tight end Brody Kerns.

Kolton Blackman had two catches for 35 yards for UL, while Perzanowski added three grabs for 21 receiving yards.

Perzanowski also led the team with 7.5 tackles. Kolten Snyder pulled down the game's lone sack.
