High School Roundup: Wheeling Central Boys Blank Parkersburg Catholic In Soccer

EAST WHEELING - Wheeling Central opened the boys' high school soccer season with an impressive, 9-0, victory against Parkersburg Catholic Friday night on 16th Street.

The Maroon Knights built a 3-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Junior J.D. Schoolcraft ignited Wheeling Central with two goals in the first half. He finished with four in the contest.

Freshman Luke Hevener recorded two tallies, while classmate Cooper Crews posted a goal and two assists. Shaun Mikels and Mason Shoemaker also found the back of the net.

Wheeling Central assists were also credited to Jaden Bosley, Logan Schoolcraft and Cade Taylor.

Senior Santino Sperlazza was strong in net for the Maroon Knights.

Johnson Powers Shadyside To 49-13 Opening Victory

EAST PALESTINE - Jayden Johnson ran for four touchdowns and passed for another as the Tigers scored early and often in a lop-sided victory over East Palestine at Reid Memorial Stadium.

Johnson had scoring runs of 4, 3, 19 and 5 yards while connecting with Michael Hendershot on a 29-yard scoring strike. Johnson finished with 15 carries for 133 yards and completed 5 of 11 passes for 98 yards.

Hendershot got the Tigers rolling when he returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. He finished with two catches for 66 stripes.

After the Bulldogs tied the game at 7, Colt Cook rambled 40 yards to paydirt and the Tigers never looked back. Cook also eclipsed the 100-yard mark with 106 on 11 carries.

Hunter Ramsay was perfect on all seven of his PAT kicks.

Lucca Smathers led the Shadyside defense with five solo tackles. Kolton Wallace had four solo stops and assisted on two others.

The 49 points are the most the Tigers have scored in a game since putting up 51 on Bridgeport in 2021.

Shadyside hosts Southern Local next Friday at Fleming Field.

Howell Accounts For Four Scores As Seminoles Trounce Liberty Union

WOODSFIELD — Cooper Howell passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more Friday in Monroe Central’s season-opening triumph over Liberty Union, 33-12.

Howell opened up the day’s scoring by connecting with Max Demchak on a 46-yard touchdown pass. In the second quarter, he scored on both a six-yard touchdown rush and an 18-yard touchdown rush.

Tailback Jet Kaiser also had a hand in the ‘Noles’ passing attack, throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to Demchak as Monroe Central scored 20 points in the second quarter to build a commanding lead 27-0 halftime lead.

Demchak ended with a banner day, catching seven passes for 142 yards and his pair of touchdowns.

Howell hooked up with Maddox Henderson for a 24-yard score in the fourth quarter as well. The senior went 14-22 for 200 passing yards and two touchdowns. He was also Monroe Central’s leading rusher with 63 marks on the ground. Kaiser had nine carries for 41 yards.

In other games not reported, Barnesville John Glenn, 34-19; Union Local won at Warren Local, 34-0; Martins Ferry took down Mt. Gilead 42-19 and Claymont blanked Harrison Central, 43-0.

GIRLS GOLF

Wheeling Park Wins Invitational

MINERAL WELLS - Freshman Ellie West earned medalist honors with a 1-over par 73 as the Patriots shot a 3-player total of 267 at the Woodbridge Golf Club. Blair Anderson finished at 96 and Abigail Thomas with a 98.

Wheeling Central finished sixth and was led by Kaylee Rotilo with a 103.

Barnesville's Kennedy Little fired an 84. She was the lone Shamrock competitor.
